In an illegal gun selling/drug sting, a convicted felon ran after trying to sell a German Luger in the sting when cops pulled up to arrest him.and a 73 yr old Reserve Officer tackled him after a chance and you can even hear his or another officers words TASER him...but he accidently grab his gun instead and shot the felon...who later died in the hospital.

Tulsa Police are not charging the officer with 2nd degree murder because they view it as an accident.

See link for story/video of incident.

not sure what you would charge him with. Maybe negligent homicide. He clearly didn't plan to shoot the guy.

Where does it say they are not charging him? It is still under investigation and they'll pass the info to the DA when it's completed. Way to make false headlines to fit a narrative.

That was actually stated at a press conf by a department head (saw it on either CBS or CNN)...of course, depending on public pressure and/or presser from DC...that could obviously change.

I don't have a problem with the age. I do have a problem with volunteers being put into conflict situations. He might have the same training but he doesn't do the job every day. A full duty cop wouldn't have pulled his gun instead of a taser and if he did he would have noticed the difference before pulling the trigger.

My guess is that if he was carrying gun and taser that he is retired cop who does the reserve thing to keep his hand in it. Strictly a guess. I have nothing to base this on other than what I have seen with OCSO where they won't let reserves do anything but get coffee.

Yep, leave all the fun to young guns..

When Harris tells one of the officers "I'm losing my breath," the officer responds, "f*ck your breath."

Nothing to see here folks, it's not murder if you've got a badge.

He doesn't do it every day is an understatement. This guy was a police officer for one year - from 1964-1965. He is also considered a "wealthy donor" to the sheriff's office.

Yeah...just heard that on CNN.

Sheriff Dept had recommended to the DA that charges not be filed...but DA felt that the 73 yr old non-paid reserve officer should be charged with 2nd degree manslaughter.

Per OKlahoma Statue, 2nd degree manslaughter carries a max of 4 years, which if found guilty in a trial (probably next year or two), could end up being a death sentence for the reserve officer.

From OK Law Office:

Manslaughter in the Second Degree
Second degree manslaughter is a catch-all offense defined in 21 O.S. § 716. This statute allows second degree murder charges for any killing that is not encompassed by the laws pertaining to murder, first degree manslaughter, excusable homicide, or justifiable homicide. An example of second degree manslaughter could include a fatal dog attack, if the owner of the dog knew that the animal was violent but failed to keep it appropriately restrained.

Like first degree manslaughter, second degree manslaughter is a felony. However, rather than a minimum of four years in prison, it carries a minimum of two years and a maximum of four.

Obviously. The Sherriff Dept. looks terrible in this for assigning him to this sting.

Lol

Bob Bates, 73, a millionaire insurance executive, was accused by the
victim's family of being a "pay to play cop" who was allowed to go along
on police operations after he donated equipment, including cars and
guns, to the Tulsa County Sheriff's Department in Oklahoma.

Mr Bates had also been the chairman of the Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz's election campaign in 2012.

Yeah, if that is the case, he should never have had a weapon on him. Playing cop with people's lives is not cool.

I love the WaPo article that dug up a police union rep from Michigan to condemn this guy saying that they pay thousands to dress up like police. Michigan, where we pay tens of thousands for people to dress up like autoworkers.

I know Stanley Glanz extremely well. He has been in my home and eaten at my table numerous times. We've even spent Christmas mornings together. There was a period of time when I slept in his bed more than he did. Most don't know but for the past 12 years he has mainly lived out of county at a very impressive ranch near Stigler that he built with his stolen money. I have jizzed in every room of that rural mansion built from his corrupt schemes to bilk taxpayers. I have rode down there with him dozens of times in the "sheriff's helicopter" which is supposed to be patrolling over Tulsa, but in reality is nothing more than a shuttle for him to his rural, out-of-county mansion. Stanley Glanz is a corrupt mother fricker who has squirreled away millions of tax payer dollars the past 25 years as Sheriff of Tulsa County. This shooting is NOT the first time one of his "pay for play" elderly deputies has shot someone. About 9 years ago, "Deputy" Ken Yazel shot a person. Yazel happens to be the Tulsa County Assessor who gave Glanz' 2nd wife a job she was not qualified for. In exchange for giving his wife a job, Glanz let Yazel go on a drug bust so he could pull his gun and be tough. Yazel ended up shooting a man. I hope this latest incident finally brings this worthless piece of chit down.

The PD made the excuse that he was "on the perimeter" instead of in the arresting party, but what the hell difference does that make? It should have occurred to them that a suspect just might run and directly involve this "deputy" even if he's on the perimeter.

You send a "deputy" to assist with parking disputes. Not to help with illegal gun and drug running sting operations.

No, somebody called ahead to have him as their cop later.

We are getting bad people off the street. Keep firing away. Maybe they will stop running from cops.

Sources: Supervisors told to falsify reserve deputy's training records

"Sheriff Stanley Glanz told a Tulsa radio station this week that Bates had been certified to use three weapons, including a revolver he fired at Harris. However, Glanz said the Sheriff's Office has not been able to find the paperwork on those certifications."

I'm not going to say anymore than I already have. But I will restate that Sheriff Glanz has plundered the tax payers of Tulsa County for years. The "play for pay" be-a-cop-for-a-day program is just scratching the surface. I've seen it up close and personal.
