Considering they have to deal with people at their most vulnerable, female nurses and techs have long learned to be complementary to make their male patients feel more comfortable.

Although in your case, I bet they were making a reference to fake, reconstitued, limp-when-wet, potato dust.

After all, they need patients like you to make their day, just in ways you never quite realized.
