I ruptured my Achilles tendon this morning playing basketball. A quick search of the internet shows there is a variety of different treatment options.

Has anyone ever ruptured their Achilles tendon? If so, how were you treated, and what was your outcome?

I really want to avoid surgery if that's possible (which it looks like it is).

My uncle is currently going through this. The doctor told him to sit down for 6-8 weeks with a boot and no pressure on it and it might heal. If not it's surgery.

Wow...I can't imagine the pain. I can't put any weight on it.

What did you do, get the diagnosis and never follow up with an orthopedic appointment?

I'm no doctor but I've been through this before. If it's a slight tear then you should be able to get away with rest. Rest Ice Compression Elevation and support it with good shoes. Keep off of it as much as possible.

You should go to the orthopedic clinic and get it looked at. They'll probably prescribe a walking boot for you. Also good would be a soft-sided boot that you can sleep in. Anything more than a minor strain and you should follow the treatment plan, including physical therapy. It might be more expensive but it'll shorten you recovery and down time.

This. Go to a doctor.

I'm definitely going...since it's a rupture, it's torn 100%. I was just asking because there are both surgical and non-surgical options. And there are even different surgical and non-surgical options. It seems like there is no standardized treatment.

If you're 100% sure it's torn, I cannot imagine an option that does not require surgery. There's not really a standard treatment because tears can be of different severity. Let the orthopaedic surgeon tell you your options, not the interwebz, and certainly not anyone on this forum.

Saw the orthopedic surgeon today. I'm going to avoid surgery, but they casted my leg from mid thigh to toes.

It's going to be a long recovery.

If your tendon tore through, with no strands left attached, and rolled up into your calf, I cannot imagine that a non-surgical option is a good course of action. Short of that it's your choice. From what I've read, the recovery time with nonsurgical is much longer.

I'm assuming his didn't tear all the way. I know that was the case with my uncle and he's still down. He only has a week or two left I believe.

Recovery is longer and there is a higher chance of reinjury but I didn't want to deal with potential complications from surgery (i.e. Infection).

My calf didn't roll up my leg (apparently, that rarerly, if ever happens), but they did cast my leg with my foot pointed down so the ends of the tendon are touching. They also bent my knee some so there's minimal stress on the muscle.
