Saban retires

No respectable UCF fan likes Saban for putting Culpepper in before he was ready. If you don't know what I'm talking about then you aren't a UCF fan. Or, just too young.

Saban has a helluva a career. Legendary College Coach for sure. I heard a sportscaster call him the best ever. I don't know about that. Some of my Auburn friends claimed he was the biggest cheater thru the time he was at LSU and then Bama. But, that could just be rumors. Who knows. Will be interesting who takes his place, but hope this is the end of the Bama Dynasty.

Cheater... You think?

He was hired at LSU by then-AD Mark Emmert, who went on to become the NCAA President in 2010.

How do you think uat was able to get it approved to do upgrades and damn near rebuild Dr. Phillips HS fieldhouse (where uat was recruiting Ha Ha Clinton Dix and Dee Hart) in 2011 when uat "didn't have an adequate place to practice" for the Capital One Bowl against Michigan State?

Conscience?

How do think all those rules against Gus's offense got passed? Conscience?

How do you think uat became the first team to win a national title without winning its division in 2012?

Conscience?

How do you think sabahr had a coach (Bo Davis, just hired at LSU) paying players (the article just says 'impermissible contact,' but there was more to it) under sabahr's watch and it not result in Class 1 infarctions levied against sabahr and uat?

Conscience?

Emmert retired March 1 , 2023; sabahr got one last political favor of getting into a CFP that uat didn't deserve.

Favors run out; sabahr runs out.

Conscience?

GOAT my azz!

"Saban retires". That once was the greatest headline in UCF football's history. Lou, no relation, nearly killed UCF football if it weren't for Gene McDowell.

Glenn Schumman would be my pick. If uat doesn't hire him here (and I hope it doesn't), it may never get the opportunity again.

He's 33.. I'm sure they'll have a shot at him.

Allegedly DeBoer cancelled his appearance on a Seattle radio show today.. coincidence.. I think not

Although DeBoer is probably the best pure football coach they can get, always worries me when a guy strays far away from where he usually coaches. From SD, spent most of his career on the west coast.

Can he coach? Yes. Can he recruit at a bama level? We’ll see.

But with DeBoer they’ll be damn good next year.

Weird.

My guess is uat/sabahr will control the hires on defense. DeBoer will make all the hires on offense. Kind of like Gus 2013.

I think it just comes down to he's a winner. I don't think they need someone who can sell Alabama, I think they want someone that can win football games on Saturdays.

DeBoer is 104-12 at it

Going to interesting to see how they look next year though, that's for sure

Has the feel of certain in-state hire of recent memory...

"The 44-year-old Harsin was 69-19 with three Mountain West titles in seven seasons at Boise State, his alma mater."

I wish DeBoer all the luck of Bryan Harsin.

uat should have hired Dabo Swinney.

uat could have cheated its way back on top AND Dabo could have gotten the portal monkey off his back by taking advantage of the NCAA's 30-day transfer portal rules and its incoming signee expansion rules, enabling Dabo to bring the top 30-40 Clemson players with him to tuscaloser, thus creating a Superstar team (college version of IGM Academy) for the next two years.

yeah it has that feel except for those minor differences of winning in the pac 12 vs the mountain west and making it to the playoffs.

Lou was actually a fascinating guy who took the program from D3 to D2. He was a nomad and had serious issues w the AD (ex fotmer FSU coach Bill Peterson) UCF had very little money. Had dreams of Champaign with a Piggly Wiggly no brand beer budget.
He probably would’ve left early but the AD n coach were oil n water and money was always a problem

McDowell did a great job. Sorry how it ended with him

Former Heisman winner Reggie Bush didn’t mince words when discussing why he believed Nick Saban retired from coaching at Alabama.

“NIL ran him away, he has no more control over 5 star recruits,” Bush said, via a comment on Instagram. “The playing field is level and he can’t handle that (laughing-face emoji).”

There's no question DeBoer is a winner. But, like Knightmare13, I'm a little surprised that Bama would tab a guy who: 1) is not a Southern; 2) is not an "SEC Guy"; and has limited experience (albeit highly successful) at the D1/P5 level.

Any manager/CEO-type who has worked in the same profession in different regions of the country knows there are distinct differences in how you operate depending on where you are. Some leaders are able to adapt. Some can't.

It'll be interesting to see how DeBoer handles his cross-country transition.

In 2013, all of Auburn's offensive assistants, save Dameyune Craig, had ties to Gus Malzahn and Arkansas. No defensive coach had any ties to Gus.

Just as Auburn did with Malzahn in 2013, uat will allow DeBoer to hire all (but one) of the offensive assistants. uat will hire all of the defensive assistants.

Per FootballScoop, "Alabama: In addition to Ryan Grubb (OC), and Jerret CcElwain (director of scouting) joining Kalen DeBoer in Tuscaloosa, as we've previously shared, Chris Low adds that JaMarcus Shephard (WRs) will also follow from Washington while Freddie Roach (DL) and Robert Gillespie (RBs) are expected to be retained."

Leopold said "No thanks."

I realize college sports is unique. Most new managers, directors, and CEOs in business are expected to do great things with the staff they inherit. (At least in the beginning.)

But in Bama's case, you are hiring a new head coach who has separated himself from the pack with his amazing W/L record. There's no question that his success has been, in part, to his ability to identify and surround himself with great assistants. So it is incredibly ballsy (IMO) to take half of his key coaching decisions away from him.
