Seattle enacts "Head Tax" on big businesses

Socialists are given two of the biggest employers and wealth builders in the country and they choose to run them out of town by using them as a punitive piggy bank.

I hope Amazon and Starbucks both leave or scale way back.

dont forget microsoft, expedia, alaskan airlines, costco, nordstrom....

I don't think it made the WC, but this tops the "buyback ban" the financial illiterate (by design) morons were clamoring for in the social mediasphere.

It's interesting how these ultra liberal west coast cities have all become overrun with homeless people.

San Francisco chief among them. Of course, the solution to spending huge sums of money on social and welfare programs, only to not have them work, is to double down and spend even more on welfare and social programs.

I'm not sure you have a grip on the homelessness problem.

This is the most self-destructive thing ... penalize companies who hire people.

Whether people like the portions of the Trump tax bill or not, one thing he got right ... tax corporations for hording cash and not making investments, especially people, especially outside the US.

I thought the whole city of Seattle was supposed to collapse a few years ago when they passed the $15 minimum wage?
Fake news .
Seattle is the new California. I wish that was a joke, but they are literally passing self-defeating legislation out there.

Isn't Boeing there, too?
Boeing made the (at least long-term) mistake of moving to Chicago (I think they have credits, for now). They have reduced production in Washington in favor of Kansas and outsourcing more and more to suppliers (in some cases, they end up acquiring them).

BTW, if you ever want to hear me really babble, strike up an AirBus & Boeing supplier (and even entire subassemblies) conversation. E.g., why are the Japanese so pro-Boeing?

You keep using that word. I do not think you know what it means.

Woah, woah. I never said it wasn't a big deal. That's the complete opposite of what I think. We've had this conversation before. How to solve it and why it's happening is where our views differ.
california has the biggest social programs in the country and yet their homeless population per capita is larger than any other states and its also grown larger in the past year vs every where else.

im going to guess that your views on tackling homelessness involve doing similar things to what california has enacted. is this a fair assumption?

I agree. But lazily and punitively going after your biggest employers is not one of them.

They should be more like Florida, and not fund public education at all.

Education funding in Florida is at it's highest in history. Education funding in the US is the most in the world. Feel free to explain why you think more needs to be spent on education. Spending the most on education should make us the best, right? Hell, let's just throw more money at it instead of fixing it.

i think carbob posted the numbers but we are 3rd in the world for spending per kid. the problem is more money now than ever goes to bureaucracy and not enough to the teachers and the supplies they actually need.

Just look at spending numbers vs. student aptitude in each of the states. There's no correlation between the 2. Even class size doesn't seem to directly affect it.

There are so many ignorant blowhards commenting on things they had no idea about.

That's why I use the term 'Progressive.' They can be massive, self-inflicting, hypocrites. In their defense, so can the Neo-Conservatives.

Not the kind of head Wayne had in mind.

Is it a head tax or a head tariff? Hopefully someone can explain the difference.
It is a head tax. The one that gets intentionally misused is that any company that negotiates a break on the tax will be said to have received a subsidy. It will often appear in the same paragraphs with "fair share" and "corporate welfare."
