This isn't about "when", but "who". Given our budget, UCFAA seems to have to choose from a few "types" of Head Coaches when GOL finally has two bad days in a row:
1. The disgraced veteran head coach with tons of experience and a Rolodex full of former GAs, Assistants, etc to draw on
2. The disgraced HC with a proven record of landing 4 star talent
3. An up and coming assistant with the great recruiter label.
4. The up and coming FCS/Low G5 guy with proven ability to win and pick talent amongst the two stars
5. The GOL hand picked heir apparent with no high level experience.
I'm sure there are others that fit our budget and FBS niche, but I figured this could be an interesting thread. I'm honestly on the fence with my opinion between 1 and 4, but the AD isn't asking for my opinion anyway.
