I'm finally cutting cable for a SkyStream 5. Any of you guys have one?

A few guys at my work have them and they love it. In-Theater movies are available, sometimes even before their release. PPVs, and pretty much anything else. All sports...

This thing almost sounds too good to be true, but my co-workers swear it is the greatest.

Care to explain the basic premise for a non-techie person? Is this on the up and up or is it like borrowing your buddies hbo go and netflix passwords?

It runs all the same apps as the Rokus and things like that, but it is completely open source. So, other apps, that can go out and search for pretty much everything, are available. So, basically it can go search out any pirated movie or show you want, or run live sports streaming, or any streaming that people choose to broadcast on certain apps. Want to watch news from Akron, you'll likely be able to find it. Washington State Catholic University Softball game? Possibly.
It runs Android OS.

Are you really cutting cable if you're going to be paying the cable company more for internet than before? They're still netting the same from you, they don't care how they get it as long as they get it.

Silly Bob, chemmie is going to trade in SkyMiles for CapitalOne points which can be converted to BitCoin and then exchanged for OpenTable points to be deposited in a Washington Mutual savings account where he gets $5 upon opening. The cable company is practically paying for him to take their internet service.

I bet there's a sign-up bonus of a free six pack of Whale Spooge Porter included.

No, it isn't stealing.
It is just a box, running android, that has apps.

I'm not interested in pirated stuff. I'll pay for subscriptions. But I'm tired of stuff not being available in the US.

For example, Motors TV in the EU et al. I would almost kill to have that in the US.
If there is a peer-networked, open source solution that let me watch that, I'd be all over it. I'd even find a way to pay as a subscriber so I'm legit.

So far the Roku add-ons pretty much prevent access to most of these, or they are short-lived solutions before being shut down.

American sports TV is becoming worthless. I totally boycotted Fox Sports and watched the 24 Hours of Daytona on IMSA.tv for a reason.

How much do the apps that facilitate the viewing of pirated content, movies still in the theater (some before the release), and PPV events cost? How much does the user pay (per month?, per view?) to get all of that content after they purchase the box?
