SMU's history aside, I don't think it's fair to assume these recruits were landed in an underhanded way.
Brown is a GIANT name in basketball.
When he calls you about playing for him, you listen.
And that means 4 and 5 star recruits landing at a school where that would have otherwise been overlooked.

This is good news for us. We are losing our best team, Louisville, and bringing in some low level clubs from the C-USA. The best way to recruit in basketball is with national TV contracts and lots of future-NBA competition to play against. Sykes proved he belong on the court against the very best in the nation by taking on the likes of Louisville, Cincy, Memphis, UConn, as well as UF, Miami, and FSU. Most 5 stars would prefer playing for a mediocre team in a top conference than a leader in a mediocre conference.
Steal brown away from SMU? I think he makes $2 million and his daughter or granddaughter is at smu.
