I had to go down to the FSU campus to get a book out of the law library. While I was there, I got stopped by some self proclaimed socialist asking me to sign a petition to keep the internet free, since the 1st Amendment guarantees a free press.
I did a double take. Whaaaa?
The kid was serious. He wants news organizations to get cost reimbursement from the government so they don't have to rely upon ads. That is what he thinks/though "free press" means.
Judging by how he was dressed and the materials he was handing out, this is a well financed organization, not some dipshit or crank.
He told me the Founding Fathers wanted to ensure a free press, this is what they would want. I replied. Hmmm ... didnt anyone teach you about Ben Franklin being in the newspaper business?
He started spouting the same stuff. I asked him if he was in favor of free guns too. He looked around and walked away.
