I'm not sure if UCF tried to estimate attendance, but it was a decent crowd for UCF. Maybe not the best, but not the worst either. 3,000? Here's a video of a pan of the crowd. They kept folks away from the ESC area. They've already removed the bench seats.
Tailgating scene in the E lots and softball looked quite lively when I rolled up around 1 p.m. I didn't partake in any of the fan events or food trucks so I ate beforehand and parked in Garage F - how was that?
The spring edition of the schedule poster is great... it is large, 24 x 36. It'll look great on the wall. Definitely try to pick up one of these.
It was awesome seeing Knight Fan Stan at the stadium. He's posted about his situation in social media (Twitter/Facebook) so I think it's okay to repeat here. About 10 days ago, KFS underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his colon that was discovered during a routine colonoscopy. Looks like they got it in time before it spread. He was in the hospital almost a week and was discharged just three days ago. He has every excuse to take it easy for a while, but he didn't want to miss an opportunity to be out there. Keeping Charging On, KFS!
Another sign of great fan passion - One of the "UCF Sisters" as I call them, they're part of UCFJay and his tailgating group, one of them is nine months pregnant and her due date was actually yesterday. So yeah, the kid could pop at any minute. But that wasn't going to keep her away. She was out there tailgating and in full force at the spring game.
Three signees were in attendance: OL Luke Hiers and WRs Cam Stewart and Tristan Payton. Hiers was wearing a sling - I didn't get a chance to ask him but I believe it was elbow surgery. He tweeted about it three weeks ago. Will try to see whether that affects his status to be 100 percent for the preseason. It's always doubtful incoming OL would be ready to play anyway, although Chavis Dickey did it last year.
Payton's teammate, 2016 WR Kevin Stepherson, was offered during his visit to UCF today.
Saw a bunch of former players... pretty much all the 2014 seniors (don't think I saw J.J. though), Blake, Jordan Rae, the McCrays, etc. Got to catch up with Jordan Rae a little bit. He's working in the financial services field down in Boca Raton.
Yeah, it was pretty hot. I know some out-of-town folks are still steamed at moving the FIU game to Thursday night, but I'm told UCF had gotten word that the game was a likely early or mid-afternoon pickup (noon or 3). That sort of forced the issue to explore other options, plus it's a better situation for the team and coaching staff with Stanford the next week. Still no word on TV though.
As for the "game," I probably should have gone up to the stands to get a better look at everything. Looks like some others in the spring game thread were pretty spot on, just based on the entirety of everything. The DL is legit, clearly the most overall unit on the team. That's not making it easy for the OL.
Chris Williams has some real playmaking ability but as GOL said needs to be more consistent. You get the sense GOL wants to see more out the safety play but likes Jordan Franks as a defensive athlete. I think you'll see Mike Rogers for sure and maybe Brandon Scott or Rashard Causey jump into that mix. I know Rogers is slotted for there anyway and while Scott/Causey were signed as CBs maybe both get a look (Scott was recruited by other teams as a safety).
GOL has Kirk Gibson on the brain.
RB Taj McGowan looked good today, but he looked better at the beginning of spring before he sprained his ankle. He's not 100 percent.
Tre'Quan Smith and Jordan Akins are the most legit WRs out there - I still feel like UCF probably erred in not signing an additional WR in the 2014 class. All three incoming WRs will have every opportunity to make an immediate impact. Smith and Akins probably had the two top plays of the game - Akins with the TD in the back of the end zone and Smith diving for a catch.
Interviewed Lorenzo Costantini (DL) and Danny Barrett (QB) in advance of the spring game, mostly about general spring thoughts, etc. Will have those interviews next week.
