It was a hot one out there today at the practice fields. In typical fashion, there's no real rush to start early on a Saturday. GOL walked outside at 10:15. Some quick individual drills and then the scrimmage got underway. Officials were on hand again.
Blake Bortles and Latavius Murray were among the attendees, hanging out amongst the fans near the end zone. Also saw Breshad Perriman.
Tre'Quan Smith, though still in yellow, did participate but there were instructions that he not be tackled. That didn't happen on his first catch and GOL barked at the defense. To me, he was the highlight of the scrimmage because we hadn't really seen him in action yet. He's got a fluidness to him and his catches look effortless. He almost always catches with his hands in front of him and not scooping into the chest.
The first touchdown of the scrimmage was a play-action pass from Holman to Smith - who was wide open - from maybe around 30 yards out.
As others have said, QB Tyler Harris can be inconsistent but he did have a nice throw to Pete DiNovo, threading the needle, early on in the scrimmage. Coaches mixed and matched positions at various points. Harris saw some time with the second team, Patti a little bit with the first team, etc. Holman without a doubt is the No. 1.
The most impressive run on the day was Dontravious Wilson on the second team running through the right side and maybe getting 30-plus yards. It appears OL Colby Watson helped spring him for a big hole.
Tyler Harris had a nice throw down the sideline to WR Jamari Fye, the son of former UCF S Jeff Fye.
Not a great day in the kicking department. Several misses and two were tipped/blocked. I believe Mark Rucker got to the first one and the second was blocked by Shaquill Griffin. Connor O'Sullivan did hit one from medium range. From looking at my notes I think that may have been the only make. Later they had Wright attempt one from 50-plus but it was wide.
At times it was 1 vs. 1, 1 vs. 2, etc. Thomas Niles had a nice TFL on Wilson.
GOL said he was upset with the play of LT Aaron Evans on first team so Wyatt Miller got inserted for a couple series.
During his time with the first team, Patti threw a strike across the middle to Jordan Akins for a nice pickup.
Later in the series, RB Will Stanback scampered in for another TD.
The play that drew the most sideline cheers was a throw from Harris to Cedric Thompson, who bowled over defenders for extra yardage.
The biggest hit of the day came from Shaquem Griffin, who leveled Nick Patti on a QB run. He got some feedback from the coaches to not hit the QB so hard (or at all).
Stanback had a long run later in the scrimmage which got the offense inside the five, then Holman found a wide open TE Kevin Miller in the middle of the end zone for the TD.
Offense looked much better than last week. Passes were mostly on target and Tre'Quan Smith is a big addition to the WR corps.
There were a few other guys there too but I stood near LB Eron Carter (Palatka) and DT Josh Keeler (Bishop Moore) at practice. Carter would likely commit on the spot if offered.
