From CoachingSearch.com:
Steve Spurrier says there’s one thing more than any other that the next South Carolina head coach has to do: recruit.
“This is a game of recruiting. Recruit, recruit, recruit,” Spurrier said Wednesday on SiriusXM College Sports Nation when asked about turning the program back around. “When you’re an older coach, you have to present the image I’m going to be here five to 10 years. When it looks like he’s going to be there one or two, it is hard to recruit. That’s why coaches usually get out by 65 or earlier.”
The Gamecocks regularly brought in top-25 classes under Spurrier, but that can still put you in the bottom half of the SEC. Kirby Smart has said many college coaches would like to go to the NFL, because of how recruiting has changed.
“We’ve got to go recruit,” Spurrier said. “Most of the coaches here two years ago are still here. I can’t blame it all on the players. We’ve not quite put the talent together, but maybe they can turn it around.”
