More than 1.4 million people subscribe to Donald De La Haye’s YouTube channel, a page that chronicles hijinks, football-related challenges and various day-in-the-life-style vlogs. One of his more musically inclined videos is called “Look At Me (NCAA DISS TRACK)”.
Despite his online presence, De La Haye is just as well known as the UCF backup kicker who made headlines because he wasn’t allowed to maintain his collegiate eligibility while also profiting off of his successful YouTube channel. In August 2017, De La Haye made the agonizing choice to quit football.
Earlier this month, the NCAA announced the formation of a working group to “examine issues highlighted in recently proposed federal and state legislation related to student-athlete name, image and likeness.” The announcement was stunning — to see an organization long opposed to student-athletes profiting in any way off of their likeness willing to at least talk about it — and also understandable considering the climate around the organization and the athletes who compete for its member schools.
