The best Group of 5 jobs

i

UCF

Without question, the new kid on the block among the top non-Power 5 jobs is UCF, which has taken off under George O'Leary.

The Knights are still very young as an FBS program, and the future looks extremely bright. When O'Leary was hired in 2004, UCF had been an FBS program for less than a decade. The Knights were 0-11 in his first season but have gone 21-4 over the past two seasons and beat Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl two years ago.

Here's the other thing: UCF doesn't have to go far to recruit
laugh.r191677.gif
. Within three hours of the Orlando-area campus, there are great football players everywhere you look. Orlando is a huge market without an NFL team[/B], and UCF's student enrollment is larger than both Florida and Florida State.

Fan attendance hasn't been great, but UCF built 45,323-seat Bright House Networks Stadium in 2007 and is adding a beach-themed bar area to the stadium in 2015. There's a separate football complex by the stadium and an indoor practice facility. It's a program that has come a long way since its Mid-American Conference days and playing its home games at the Citrus Bowl in downtown Orlando.

The truth is that UCF is always going to play in the shadow of Florida and Florida State, but the upside for the UCF program is tremendous when you consider the financial commitment that's being made to football, not to mention the climate in Central Florida and fertile recruiting base that goes with it. There's a chance a Power 5 conference could come calling if there's another round of expansion.

The fact that Marshall and SMU "just missed the cut" totally killed my appreciation of that piece.

Yeah, right in the middle of recruiting country. Nice. Way to open that wound again.

Also I don't understand how someone can say attendance is not great. I think putting 40k in our stadium given the competition is pretty impressive. It is certainly higher than several P5 programs who bring in big name games

Now list the worst 5 P5 programs that don't belong and replace them with these 5. Thanks.

Purdue, Wake, Vandy, Northwestern, and Colorado are my top 5. 4 of the 5 are great academic schools, but athletics not so much.

Apparently Miami isn't even in this discussion anymore. The marked decline of the Miami program can only mean good things for UCF.

We don't average 40K do we? I thought it was more like 34/35K.

Almost 38k last year. 42k the year before. If we can get a quality P5 in BHNS every year we'd average 40k and more than that the years usf is in Orlando. Our home schedule last year was absolutely craptacular. We'd be sold out if we were in a P5 conference.

This is a great article for a future head coach to see, but hopefully we will be a P5 schol by the time we are looking for one. I feel that our attendance is great considering some of the teams that we play. It will be only OK next year, because our P5 games are away. Hopefully the traditional Saturday games will be played at a good time and not 12:00 on a 90 degree day. Good thing is now we have the Tiki bar!!!

I wonder why the attendance smack wasn't thrown at Cincy as well? They had a game under 20k last year. Most were around 30k or less.

"Here's the other thing: UCF doesn't have to go far to recruit"

Apparently GOL didn't get the memo.

Same with Houston. They never even reached a 30k average. I don't know why we keep getting digs at our attendance when UCF holds the 3rd highest attendance average in the G5 since 2007. The drop of is staggering after that. UCF has one of the BEST in attendance compared to other G5 programs. Doesn't make sense.

Did cincy play in a temporary location last year? or am I imagining that?

And a few of the folks wondering where we were on the list were UCF folks...and I thought we were best friends now, Shark.

I take it as garbage that Marshal would get mentioned yet not ECU. What that program offers anyone is beyond me. They're stuck in a dead end conference where they will have to go undefeated every year just to sniff the top 25 and even then it's not a given. Why in the world would a coach want that and live in the dumpster fire of a state that's West Virginia?

FUC definitely deserves to be on the list, but our program is a hell of a lot better than Marshal, a team that has most of its name recognition from a tragedy and its subsequent movie, Randy Moss, and having horrible schedules.

LOL.....yeah I'm totally good with you 29 but you have to admit there is a sizable part of your fan base that has a "Little Man" complex.

Marsha is only on the list because the writer has a short memory of the only good season they've had this century in a watered down 1AA league.

But what are ECU's merits? You don't play in a large population media center, you don't recruit very well (say what you want about Skip, but he could uncover some 2 star gems every year), your best team in years couldn't finish higher than 4th in conference, I don't hear anything good about our facilities, you don't seem to send alot of guys to the NFL, haven't won a conference in 5 years.

Even USF has you beat in a few of these catagories

FWIW here's a look at our facilities. http://www.ecupirates.com/facilities/ecu-facilities.html

Are we Alabama? No, but Ruff and crew can recruit pretty good. We may not hit the high star lists, but there's a lot of talent on the field. As far as population media center, the eastern part of the state has roughly 2 million people living in it. Like you guys and competing with UF and FSU, we have to fight for fans due to all the Walmart ACC fans who pull for UNCheats and NCSU and Duke. But one could argue the same thing for Houston who, yeah, is in a bigger area but fights for crumbs that UT, etc. leaves. Are people really watching Houston on TV if they can't fill their stadium?

You guys do have more players in the NFL (18 to our 6) but UCONN (20) has more in the NFL than you do. Does that mean they are a better football team than UCF or ECU? As far as conference wins, Houston has won 1 this century, Marshall just won one because our teams aren't there anymore, and Colorado State and SMU are laughable.

C'mon, man, you know ECU is a better job than Marshall, SMU, Colorado St., or even Houston? Which one would you rather have?

Houston can fill their stadium when they win and make headlines. That probably makes coaching there more attractive than ECU.

Cincinnati is clearly the best job. We pay our football coaches more than any other Group of 5 school. Nippert Stadium is the best facility in the G5 now that the renovation is completed. We have solid corporate $upport!

ECU needs to go jump in a cold lake....no way is ECU at top job. It's a dead end job.

Poor delusional ECU fan. ECU brings nothing to the table outside of good football attendance.

Saying ECU is a dead end job is a bit much. Dead end jobs have no future and no gravitas. Saying ECU is that way is asinine. Is your job good? Yes it is. Use your brain, man.

You are an idiot. You've proven yourself an idiot on thread after thread. You're own mother probably doesn't like you because you are an idiot. Houston has hardly any chance of being in a bigger conference since Texas is already divided up into the big schools. You're not even king of your own town.

Idiot.

29, sorry you are being targeted by the village idiots, Bearcat Nipple & Cougar High Queen.....

In lieu of making sound arguments why ECU is a great job, you just tried to tear down others. Houston (and I preface this by saying I'm a UH Alum and live in Houston) has a MUCH higher ceiling than ECU. When they're winning its standing room only and there is alot of local chatter in a big city.....in 2009 for example, UH fever was running quite high.

So they have a big metropolitan edge, AND Texas being in the top 3 talent states means they have access to alot of talent that ECU has no hope of attracting.

SMU, has $$$$$$, lots of it....That will attract coaches that will never look at ECU

Have no idea about Col St.....never seemed like much of a destination before, not sure its better now.

Marsha? Been to WVa.....a cesspool of backwards hillbillies.

I hope you're not thumping your chest because your imprint is barely out of Orlando's city limits, according to that map. Plus, basing this on Facebook likes allows me to frankly not put much stock in this map. Durham is predominantly UNC fans on this map yet the home of Duke. State has a way bigger presence in NC than that as well. I think a Carolina fan came up with that garbage.

Well, Shark, you got me.

First, maybe Cougar what's his name remembers the 2009 CUSA championship game where the mighty Case Keenum and crew laid an egg in Greenville. I think you guys beat them that year as well.

I think ECU is being sold short. Football first school, new, state of the art facilities, a rabid fan base, and on the cusp of doing something great if we can stop losing WTF games like Temple and on last minute hail marys (I don't think I have to remind you of that one). We do more with less than any of the schools on that list (see attached because it has some interesting information regarding UCF as well; just ignore the rah rah comments since it was meant for ECU fans). I don't have the time or energy to do some point for point, data based post, especially when you have tards like those other two guys trolling around.

See you guys on Nov 19 for football or whenever we play on the diamond.

Yep, the 2009 Cougar season came crashing down on a bright late November day in Orlando, as they were looking to go into the Top 10 (they were #12) for the first time in forever.

And you pointed out a reason yourself why ECU isn't a destination job.....you play in a basketball state with usually weak in-state teams .....of course, NCSt had a great year with a Florida QB who was just too strong and elusive for us, and Duke is having a good couple of years.

I don't disrespect your program at all, in fact I'm trying to plan a Fall trip to O-town and attend our game. Who is going to be your QB this year?

EZU and Marsha whining "why not us?"....LOL

It's this kid's spot to lose.

http://www.ecupirates.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/kurt_benkert_843863.html

He's big, he can run, has a cannon for an arm. It will be his first extensive action. He's the one that was put in on that goal line play against Florida in our bowl game where he fumbled (still a tad of a sore subject on playcalling by Riley, whether his knee was down, etc.). I'm glad we play you guys late because that will give him time to become comfortable as a starter. Our offense shouldn't miss a beat and our RB stable is awesome now due to recruits and transfers.

Once again, our secondary is the question mark.

In a perfect world our offense should be plug and play with the playmakers we supposedly have. We'll see...
