Did any of you philistines manage to get out and see this film? I think a lot of you could use a little education. The number of homeless children enrolled in Central Florida public schools is roughly 15,000 and still growing. Orlando is one of the worst in the nation for child homelessness. Directly in the shadow of the "happiest place on Earth."

Orlando is a shithole and getting worse every day, I'm not surprised.

I believe it. Rising rent prices with stagnant wages with the largest employers being low wage part-time hospitality jobs.

It's one of the reasons I got out of Florida.
I won't say much more.

This problem is worse in California. Homeless camps in the shadows of Silicon Valley and even San Diego

Disney may be the largest employer in the state but the next 9 largest are government and health care systems. Also, South Florida experienced a 4% wage increase last year which was the highest in the nation.

What's your point? This film isn't about South Florida. It's about Central Florida which consistently has the one of the lowest median incomes of a major metropolitan area in the nation.

Mods, please move this thread over to Lifetime, Oxygen, The Oprah Network, or some other place where women (and weak men) can "talk about their feelings."

Is there something wrong with having compassion for your fellow man?

Of course there isn't, but unless you're actually going to volunteer at a homeless shelter or accept a homeless family into your own home all of this "feel good" message board activism is pretty lame.

Fair enough. Hopefully, Chemmie will step up. Those stupid, uneducated Christians are obviously not doing enough to help.

Yea, throwing a fiver into the collection tray is really helping out a lot of people!

LOL. That's all my family has ever done. Churches and christian organizations do a boatload to try to help these people.

My wife is a principal at a school so I see and hear about the issues - it's heartbreaking. We've spent a lot of our own money and a lot off time shopping to help these people that are struggling - we always give anonymously. On a couple of occasions I've literally given folks the jacket off my back when they were cold and had nothing.

It is. My wife is a counselor and does in-home visits almost daily. She's been to hotels, crack houses, shelters, and everything in between. It is crazy in a city that generates the amount of wealth that Orlando does, in a country that generates the amount of wealth that we do, that this kind of life is so prevalent for children and the numbers are growing.

There was a local pig farmer (I knew him from my days working produce at Publix when he used to come in and get scraps for slop) who used to come to Saturday night Mass and put $100 in the plate every week. Looking at him, you'd wonder if the guy were homeless or not. Point is, you never know who gives what, or what others do to help.

Orlando has actually progressed beyond Tampa and Miami in a number of categories. I've lived and worked in many places in America, some rated higher than Orlando, that are visibly worse off than Orlando. But it's not worth arguing about.

So, how do you fix it?

Sounds like another type of "counseling" might be going on, but that's neither here nor there.

Truly is a shame that there's such an epidemic in this country. Meanwhile there are millions of illegal immigrant kids in our schools at a cost if $14,000 per year that will soon be competing with American born citizens for jobs. I'd rather see that 14K spent on taking care of Americans first.
