The GOAT is hanging them up.

It would have been a great story, or a complete disappointment. I rather have the unknown so that I can remember KZ as the GOAT
^^^ This

MZ couldn't have known DG would have gone down either.
Hindsight is everything ... or nothing.

I like the fact that he did what he did, and there should be no regrets.
We all didn't know he'd go down with that injury either.

I don't believe you can directly compare two players from different eras. They had completely different coaches, teams, and resources and competed while the program was in very different situations in national perception. KZ and Daunte are both GOATs!

While true, Daunte had secondary (to KZ):

-coaching
-teams
-resources
-a fraction of the program that exists today
-virtually limited national perception. In fact, one might say that the only reason UCF had any perception from 1995-1999 was because of DC.

And he still is the leading passer in UCF history in total yards and TDs.

I am just glad we had two noteworthy players over whom we can debate!

KZ was an NFL starter long shot before the injury but that isn’t usually factored in for most fans on his impact for the Program. The timing along w Frost elevated the Program and got us the Big 12 invite

Daunte is the better player if you plugged him in though into a Program that wasn’t working out of a garage.

Absolutely agree!

Was Daunte the more talented QB? Absolutely. But as far as accomplishments go and what he meant to the program it's KZ by a longshot.

It's just the truth, UCF could easily fallen off the map post-Culpepper, was his presence invaluable in our transition from Division 2 absolutely, but under Milton we literally went from a winless team to a program that was the talk of the College Football world, and really cemented the program as a player in the CFB landscape which is proven fact considering the Big 12 move.

I respect and love what both these guys did for for a program but to be the goat you have to have the hardware and KZ has the hardware...

It reminds me of Marino versus Montana. Marino probably had more talent and and definitely had more records but Montana was always seen as the goat because of the hardware.

I am willing to bet that the KZ crowd wouldn't know Daunte Culpepper if he walked up and fell on them.

Daunte is the greatest QB in UCF's history.

KZ is the best player.

There's a major difference.

Well now I'm confused about what you took exception to in my 1st statement.

If Milton would of made through the end of that second season into a continuation of a 3rd undefeated season we probably wouldn't be struggling with this conversation here but KZ was put down by a fluke injury / dirty hit (pick one).

The heart of Daunte and KZ were the same. The physical abilities of Daunte were something to watch. The playmaking ability of KZ was something to watch.

Daunte played in Division 1 all 4 years. AA and A. Not D2. He should have had UCFs first Bowl team and probably win but having 3 losses back then knocked you out for a Hawaii team. He was our first 5 star we ever got directly out of high school and has been the best NFL QB to date. That helps in recruiting still 23 years later. If you ask most NFL coaches, players and fans who was the better player 99% would say DC if not 100%. 50% of them wouldn’t know who KZ even is.

Sorry I forgot 1-AA is what FCS used to be called I misspoke.

Not sure why they changed the terms.
I am sure ESPN was behind it and had what they thought was good reason. I mean, it's kind of stupid if you think about it. The whole notion was based on the upper tier having bowls to decide a championship and the lower having a playoff to decide one. The former does what the latter does now, to a lesser extent.
