1. We’ve been playing D-I basketball for 28 years, and tonight we’ve won 20 games in a season for just the 7th time. And let’s just say that for most of those 28 years we weren’t playing this level of competition…
2. By my count (and I’m probably wrong), Isaiah has hit 3’s and made a come-from-behind block in each of the past four games. High scorer with 21 points, and 11 rebounds. UTEP basically had no answer for him in the 2nd half.
3. We hit three 3’s to open the game, one each by Marcus, Keith and Tristan. I don’t think any of them scored again in the half.
4. UTEP is a damn fine defensive basketball team - that’s how they beat Memphis at Memphis, and Southern Miss at home. We were the better defensive team tonight.
5. I’m not gonna comment on the halftime entertainment, except to say that if it was a school night the 9:00 halftime start would be past their bedtime.
6. 19 assists, just 3 TO’s. Those are great stats!
7. So AJ & Josh sat the first half, presumably due to Rice incidents. Let’s do some math - we’ve played 28 games. At 5 players for 2 halves, that’s 280 player halves so far. By my count, this season we’ve had 110-ish potential player-halves lost due to suspensions and/or eligibility issues. The fact that we’ve won 20 games under those circumstances is amazing!
8. We’re up one at half. At the 16:00 minute in the 2nd half we’re tied at 29. We stretch the lead to 8 with 8 minutes to go. Keep that 8-minute mark in mind…
9. Marcus played all 40 minutes, and hit 3 straight baskets to get us to that 8-point lead. He had to play PG for the entire first half, which puts him in a mismatch problem. Once AJ returned his game returned.
10. With AJ and Josh out in the 1st half, PJ, Kasey and Rod got some pretty good minutes. They played well!
11. Knight Moves began the game in their shimmery gold short, short, short, short dresses and those tall black boots (I’m not sure which were longer). Alas, they left at halftime and didn’t return for their “halftime” performance until that 8:00 mark (and here’s my point ? given the team’s domination after the 8:00 mark, think what would have happened if Knight Moves halftime performance was (gasp) actually at halftime!!). New black & gold tux-y outfits…
12. Just one home game left - where DID this season go??!! Senior Night for AJ, PJ, Dwight and Jeff (I do hope he’s there). You should be there, too.
