The Naughty Kid Syndrome?

This board has always been in the gutter, no denying that. But lately, you can't help but wonder WTF IS WRONG with some people here?

Be it climate-change (it just a coincidence that we're getting all these big storms and huge forest fires nowadays)......the big steal (Trust me, it wuz massive voter fraud---Trump actually won reelection by a landslide)......covid (no big deal, it's just the sniffles)....the covid vaccines (a Big Government scheme to control us)......or intervectin (Horse paste works, baby!) you have to really work hard to fathom how in the hell a supposedly-sane and responsible group of adults could embrace such stupid-ass positions with a straight face.

Seriously, how does somebody intelligently defend such nonsense positions? My best working theory is that it's the 'naughty kid syndrome': Piss off Mom and Dad (The Majority of Sane & Responsible People) by defying them to gain a little attention no matter the consequences.

Hell on this board alone, full of supposedly college educated people, there are legitimately mentally incapacitated individuals. There are flat earthers, anti-vaxers climate deniers, young earth creationists running around.
