Schools jumping from one Power Five conference to another almost seem cliche compared to what is likely to be the next big move in realignment.

Unless Oklahoma president David Boren was giving us some kind of warning – saying the Big 12 needs to be 12 – before grabbing Oklahoma State and making a mad dash to the SEC, let’s talk about what is likely to be the next big move in realignment:

The Power Five conferences – all 65 teams (if you include Notre Dame) - collectively bargaining one TV contract, instead of each negotiating a TV deal, sometime in the next 10 years........................................................................................................

Never gonna happen. No way you get buy in from every conference for a deal like that.
I don't know if every conference would be a problem. If every conference stood to get more money, versus on their own, they'd join forces. I think the problem would be Notre Dame.

I think the biggest issue with this scenario would be the TV networks and how they would divide the content. Too much content for even ESPN to do on their own, and the other networks aren't going to sit back and just take what espn doesn't want. Not to mention, when the conferences are separate it creates more money for all because there is constant competition.

No way will the Big Ten (with their own valuable TV Network) and the SEC (with their own valuable TV Network) ever allow that as both of those conf will soon be earning $40 Million - $45 Million per team per year..almost DOUBLE that of other P5 Conferences/teams.

I'm too lazy to look up the exact numbers, but the NFL salary cap is over $140m/year. That's less than all the TV money and for 32 teams. So let's say that collectively they could negotiate about the same total contract.
Would the B1G or SEC turn their noses up at $70m/year vs $45m/yr to keep some competitive advantage? Better question would university Presidents, who are always fighting budget problems, let their ADs convince them to turn down $25m/yr?
Keep in mind the Ohio State's and Alabama's would still make tons more than the Iowa State's via ticket sales, merchandising, and donations.

OT: Nice avatar DJ. Now I know who I have been sitting behind for the last eight seasons.

Oh, and I agree that 65 teams and all the networks are not going to sit around the campfire and sing kum ba yah, regardless of how many millions are being left on the table.

Not sure what NFL salary Cap has to do with tv money for college football...the NFL is widely more popular than college and networks will not give NFL type money for access to games that casual fans don't watch...even people on this site admit to not ever watching any other game that UCF isn't playing in...casual NFL fans will watch Cleveland vs Jacksonville on a Thursday night game.

Due in part to the popularity of fantasy football. Just one reason why people will watch Cleveland vs Jacksonville on a Thursday night game.

Oh how i hate when people invoke economic discussions then expound on the possibilities of centralized planning aka communism. This guy needs a lesson on spontaneous order and why competition is good.

Welp, we can say with some real certainty that you weren't in the honors program for Political Science, because this has absolutely nothing to do with Communism.

And GAMBLING....NFL has always been a cash cow for legal but mostly, illegal bookies.

Its always funny to hear Al Michaels and others that make some funny quips...after what seems to be a meaningless scoring play (TD or FG), in the closing minutes of a game that doesn't change the outcome of the game...but it does in regards to the pt spread.
