I was walking through downtown Louisville last week while there was a "Family Fest" happening. In the middle of the festival there was a teenage battle of the bands. Most of the bands were comprised of kids between 12 and 14 and were covering Led Zeppelin, White Stripes, Green day, etc. They played these songs while their parents were cheering and being generally encouraging. That got me wondering, what do these kids have to rebel against? If their parents are encouraging them to play music that is(or was) subversive and, more broadly, society is more accepting of different sexualities and drug use, what do they do to undermine that? How can these kids be anti-establishment when the establishment encourages it?

news flash, even rage against the machine only rages against the republicans...

oh and lisa, green day has sucked since dookie, and white stripes were never good...

how many white kids in this country playing punk actually have it hard where they need to be against somthing? if anyone should be playing angry punk it should be low income level minority kids...

at this point the best punk band in the world sings about how much florida sucks....

The white stripes were never good? What? This is a joke, right?

Jack White is one of the best and the White Strips kicked ass.

I wondered that myself and its not just today. Looking back makes me wonder if some of these kids that rebelled against their parents shouldve added "hey mom and pop i still hate gays but youre annoying me" or "i get you dont like black people but maybe i want harder music than 70s rock an beethoven". How about "i like Reagan just as much as you but i want tattoos". Just because they wanted to play their instruments harder or stranger doesnt change some of their thought process.

The type of music wasn't really the point. That was just the way other generations used as a firm of rebellion. My point was that there is less to rebel against now than in previous three or four decades. The idea of sex, drugs and rock & roll are more in line with iTunes advertising than any counter culture.

So are you saying the exploitation of sex in culture led us to same sex marriage as we know of today? Did those very same people that wish to regress sex culture back to pre Stonewall riots were the ones that were telling their parents to loosen up?!?

OP can't be serious. You don't have to rebel to play good or even bad music. Seriously doubt most musicians care what the song is about. Real musicians that is .

If the point is that the younger generation has nothing to complain about then you are old and are saying that you had to walk to school uphill both ways.

No. I'm saying that hyper-consumerism/late capitalism seems to have made being a teenager horrible.
