It’s the same mentality as the guy that wished he hadn’t called the police after two teens held him up at gunpoint trying to steal his car. It’s not white privilege per se, although it gets lumped into that catch-all. It’s the naïveté of comfortable people who are otherwise intelligent people but are unable to view the world through any prism but their own. Unable to truly conceive of a world where you give people the opportunity to be good and they do bad things anyways. Unable to truly conceive of the fact that people can have all the exact same opportunities and information and they will make wildly different choices.
