Frost: "Depth is gonna be a problem for us in a bunch of places this year," Frost said after the team's first practice Friday. "That's one of the reasons we gotta keep our guys fresh and ready to play and hope we can bring some young guys along and some guys that hadn't played a lot. Hopefully we can address the depth issue as we go on in the future around here but for this year, there are several spots where I don't feel like we're really deep."

Disagree. We weren't an 0-12 team talent wise last year like we were when GOL got here. We were a 4 or 5 win team last year that succumbed to injuries, youth and low motivation.

Training has team playing up tempo unlike last season. Existing players have experience from last season and recruits coming in are faster than usual.

I'm seeing 7-5 team with new speed training and offense. We're going to catch some teams off guard this season. Freshmen QB is already being touted by Frost as a play maker so if upperclassmen can't sustain drives, Frost wont hesitate to bring him in.
He was the best QB in his state and played our style of offense.

We are going to be in ALL our games NOT like last season where we were out of game by second quarter.

UCFast!

Last year was an aberration. A perfect storm of injuries, youth and incompetence. With any kind of coaching this team will win some games. The big thing holding us back will not be talent, but understanding of the system.

I'm just hoping:
1. We are usually competitive and don't ever give up: that was always a UCF trait
2. We avoid too many major injuries
3. Attendance comes back, fans are loud, and don't leave early no matter what the score
good point...those always help!

The scary part is that our strongest area is DB, but it seemed that every opposing receiver was super wide open last year. They could have knitted an afghan with the cushions we gave them along with constantly out of position corners. And those weren't our freshmen either. It was just pitch and catch the second half of the season.

I don't blame Frost not letting people watch his practices with so much installation left to do. Believe this will be what holds us back the most, learning the system but when it all comes together, look out.

From the new Dodd article:

"When people haven't seen it," Frost said. "I think it is an advantage."

I blame the coaching staff for the performance of the DB's last year.

If depth is weak, then that's not a new thing here. Just think of the Kruczek years. Some of those years weren't so bad. I'm just searching for our 1st win.

I think it is a little early to be predicting wins. If we are going to win more than a couple of games, the OL will have to be drastically improved. We never got much push at the point of attack last year. That being said, with faster players on the field, the OL won't have to sustain their blocks for as long as they did last year.

It's not depth that's changing. That was a big problem with GOL. What's different is somewhat of a return to the Kruczek/McDowell expedient approach: smaller linemen because the agile big guys ALL go to P-5 schools. Smaller linemen dictate a very different offense than O'Leary's 3 yards and a cloud of dust, chew up the clock, and bend but don't break on defense.

DB's will usually look bad when there is no pressure on the QB. We rarely threatened the QB last year.

To be fair to those players, it's hard being on the field as much as they were.

Agreed on the need to improve the OL performance. But I believe that Frost's recruiting may make an immediate impact here. Dowdell and Beard may push the envelope very soon if not right away.

Also, with existing OL guys, I think the talent level and size was there when they arrived on campus but it doesn't seem they were coached up sufficiently. I believe that the improved diet, conditioning and coaching by the current successful OL coaches will add a noticeable difference with them as well.

We already had a lighter center and conditioning/nutrition regimens can downsize linemen to make them more mobile and have the endurance to stand up to the number of plays. Last year, we had so many 3 and outs that our linemen only got half a season of experience.

With this new system they should be on the field a similar amount this year. Difference is we will score on some of those 3 play series.
I'll be happy with two or three wins. As long as we're competitive the season will be a success.

Agreed. That was not a GOL defense. They were undisciplined and out of position most of the time. They looked like they had no idea where to be. If UCF had one constant over the years it was well coached disciplined defense. They were lost without a compass. Why GOL ever hired Breshanahan is beyond me.

If UCF can take SC State out of the game in the first half, that would be a great opportunity work on depth issues.

Shit - if UCF can wipe the floor with SC State for our first game it would really give the players some confidence for the giant blue gorilla about to breathe down our faces the following week.
