Anyone have any thoughts about the performance of the football team in the spring game for those of us that were unable to attend?

this board isn't exactly booming with enthusiasm(I realize this is spring, but come on). I know we aren't a big time P5 school, but the crowd looked pretty weak to me(not sure what the announced will be, but I know for sure under 10k).

Anyway, I went and watched the first half. I focused on positions(particularly Corner and WR, and a little bit of Patti)...

The redshirt frosh corner- Chris Williams really stood out to me! he had a pick that he almost returned for a TD...And dropped TWO more picks that could have been pick 6's as well! he will make the NFL. Guaranteed. He already has the height and can play off man very good, and knows his away around various zone coverages. I am VERY impressed by him. My only criticism is that he seems to be either--out of shape or doesn't give full effort all the time.

The WR's could be a weak link. Didn't see all that much that impressed me(although#89 and Divino had a few decent catches, remember only stayed till half).

Patti? like I said earlier in the week...a fullback playing QB, He can scramble and about his only shot, is rolling out on some boots...he does scramble pretty good with some quick feet.

#7, the RB(forgot his name), looks pretty good as well.

It was a hot one. That reminded me of what those afternoon games in September will be like.

I like the play of #88 TE Jordan Akins. He is a big target and can haul in passes. There was one play where he shrugged off the hit after the catch. The catch of that bomb by #80 was awesome.

The RB's are looking good. Wilson and Jones ran the ball well. I hope that when Stanback is in the mix, he can produce this year better than last.

Patti was better than I thought he would be. But sometimes it looked like he had to sidearm the ball through holes in line.

CB Chris Williams had a great jump on the ball that he picked off. There were a couple of other plays where the DB's almost picked them off.

Looking forward to the season!

Because of play of DB Williams and Safety Griffin (#10) the defensive backfield looked good.
Also, Franks looked hungry for contact out there at safety.

Holman settled down and made some good throws. #2 looked okay and #8 looked not so good.
Interested to see Bo Schneider in summer now.

WRs are going to be okay with 3 WRs coming this summer. #80 and #88 are very good. All the
rest are filler. Looking for one of 3 WRs coming to campus to take third WR position. Don't
think Oldham (20) is going to be #3 receiver. Perhaps Payton?

Since WRs are a little weak, we re using the TEs more who are upperclassmen. This group
looks good with MIller (85) leading the group.

The OL looks improved and we have some depth.

The DL is our strongest group.

Not so sure about our LBs. Decent against the run but kind of slow in passing game.
Also, #16 looked short out there in passing play coverage. This could be a weakness
if he's the starter?

Running game is sporatic. But two of our better backs (28 and 27) didn't play because of injuries.
Main problem is hitting the line hard. #7 was inconsistent here. I like #29 Jones who made a
nice quick cut one time when hole was closed around the outside and gained 7 yards. They
will be improved from last year.

Most (not all) diehards on this site are members in the Dungeon...which has a long thread about the Spring Game...plus in-depth comments/video by Brandon (publisher of this site) as usual.

Yes...Williams definitely stood out...along with the DL (but was that do to a still juggling OL due to injuries and/or 2nd unit?).

True Freshmen early enrollee RB Taj McGowan showed some good decision making on some runs, going almost immediately north/south after initial cut.

As the game went on, WR/TE Jordan Akins showed what he can do...using his height and size/bulk to get some YAC, while showing some good hands.

Redshirt Freshman WR Tre'Quan made the play-of-the-day, by stretching out to make a diving catch on the 50 yd pass from Holman.

Hopefully everyone came out of the game 100% healthy so they can start hitting the weights/conditioning program...and then the next big step I think, is Holman working with the incoming true freshmen WR that will be enrolling in June in off-season workouts on their own to get a jump start on August camp...as at least 2 or maybe all 3 Freshmen WR will need to play this coming year.

Here's a long write-up by UCF Athletics.com with some video post-game comments after the Spring Game.

good summary...adding to it by saying that I thought this was a better spring game than last year....

WR's - beyond #88 and 80 they're a work in progress with some of the young WR's #86, 5, and 14 showing they can catch the ball and be serviceable if needed....all are Florida kids so I'd like them to get the chance if they continue to improve....also hoping to see a really top notch receiver or two from the new frosh...

TE - we've got 2 good ones who can catch the ball....need to use them more this year...

QB - Holman came out throwing the ball poorly but improved....if he plays like he did after he settled down, we're in good shape at QB....but he has to be more consistent for a full 60 minutes...our #2 QB is a real question mark....Patti is so small that he has to roll the pocket to have any success...and when he did, he threw it well a couple of times but threw it off balance and very poorly a couple of other times....from the pocket he threw into coverage and int's were/will be the result....#8 is just not comfortable back there...made a couple of good throws but otherwise was very inaccurate....he also does not look off receivers and does not go thru progressions....but there's where the coaches need to step it up....the QB's have to progress from HS to D1 with their help...looks to me like #8 needs their help....

OL - need to improve in both run blocking and protection....of course our DL is good but OL improvement is needed and seems to be an ongoing, repetitious request for our program......

RB's - deep but their success will depend on the OL's improvement

DL - dominated....would have had a half dozen sacks...but need to see if they can tackle the QB (unlike last year)...

LB's - better than expected and pretty deep...but will need game day repetitions to see how good they really are...

CB's - good competition from a number of athletic but inexperienced guys....I expect Chris Williams to eventually start because he's a playmaker.... but right now, may the best man win....

S - weakest D position...it's hard to replace two multi year starters......a great opportunity for someone to step up but it could also be a big weakness unless someone does...

P/K - Punter has improved...impressed with most of his kicks and hang time...Kickers very accurate but no boomers...FG should be OK but Kickoffs may be weak....

I hope the team jells early in the season as I'd like to see us give Stanford and USC a run for their money in our 2 OOC away games...it'll depend on our QB playing 60 solid minutes, the OL improving and the D secondary playmaking...

Last spring game was a real disappointment after Bortles and Storm left.

Like GOL said "We need to get better to compete for conference championship."

Hope second string QB isn't needed.

Other WRs okay like #5 but we need more talent to show up and I hope we got
something special waiting for us with this new class of recruits.

#55 (Grant) back in at center might help our OL if he's healthy. Sounds like GOL will
be looking at that after his comment about the center position.

I'm concerned about loss of J.J. and Hall in Return Game. Who's going to be
a playmaker for us in this category?

I'm glad we play our tougher in conference games at home this season. Didn't see victory
at South Carolina or Stanford on the field there yesterday.

Once again we should know by early October what we got. Seems to be the trend with
the GOL regime

My prediction 2-2 in September going into conference record of 7-1 if we play better at WR and RB.
I like athleticism and competition in defensive backfield. Hope we can go somewhere other than
St. Pete next year for bowl game. To me we go 8-4 if we struggle.

JJ and Hall didnt return every game last year...I think Akins did but he was too slow...we need a fast shifty guy.
