No. 1, Learn to HATE losing
Having followed Gus's career closely for last 15 years, Gus, at times, suffers inexplicable losses when he has the better talent. Navy, 2022, for example. Gus's ho hum attitude after devastating losses infuriates fans.
No. 2, Become a better motivator (or at least hire a team shrink).
Gus losses to inferior opponents in part because he is a poor motivator. His teams at times play down to their competition. Gus needs to seek out help in this area. He may have to hire a team quack like saban did to get the guys' minds right.
No. 3, Hire the best people.
Stop promoting/hiring desperate, unqualified coaches to positions where the stage is too big. Gus has a huge ego and wants to be the smartest person in the room--and it comes back to bite him when his fledgling staff cannot help make effective game day coaching adjustments.
No. 4, Stop letting his offense get in its own way.
Sometimes Gus overthinks things. Instead of continuing to call whatever has been working, he calls the wrong play at the wrong time because it happens to be on the play sheet for a certain down and distance. Also, he gets cute at times at the wrong times, especially in the red zone and short yardage situations.
No. 5, Manage substitutions more effectively.
Gus "thinks players making specific plays," but sometimes he just needs to trust the guys on the field to do their jobs. The perfect personnel packages do not have to be on the field to execute a great play call.
Finally, Gus will NEVER give up control of the offense. I didn't even consider listing it as an option, but these five areas are within his control and will make UCF more successful in the Big12.
