"So Demings is now recommending that the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts center expansion be put on hold, that the upgrades for Amway Center be put on hold and that money for the University of Central Florida sports village be scrapped."

Funding two projects locals won’t use sounds like the hotel lobby at work.

Pumping more money into the convention center. They’re already discounting groups to get them into the building.

How big of a convention center does Orlando need. You need transportation from end to end already.

I have served on Tourism Development authorities in the past here in North Carolina. Hotel taxes and their uses are governed by each state's laws . So , my experience may not apply to Florida . Typically bed taxes are collected to promote more tourism and for direct tourism driven capital projects. Hoteliers do drive the train here and unfortunately the IDrive crowd doesn't see the benefit to UCF and the BigXII bringing in heads to beds especially for them. I am spitballing here . I support UCF going after the funds but I understand the push back by those who are driving the tourism train here .

Maybe going forward Terry and Company should reach out to the hotels and put packages together for visiting teams and families to show them the tourism engine UCF truly can be here . They should do this in concert with reapplying for the project. Cartwright should invite the good mayor to UCF football and host him in his suite , if he already has not. If this money is as political as folks say UCF leaders from the trustees to the President on down need to play the game a bit longer , build real relationships in orange county leadership and with the hotel powers . If they are already doing to this , great . If they are not , they need too. I say keep it at and the money will likely come UCFs way in the near future.

I've talked with Demmings during passing and he's one of the dumbest politicians I've ever I've talked to. The guy can barely string more than four sentences together as he's glancing over your head. Orange county voted this guy in, so UCF can take it as it is. My words to Terry, tell visiting fans to stay out at the Beaches and enjoy Cocoa and the Space Coast. The Brevard gov't supports UCF more than Orange county. Why promote visiting fans to stay in Orange County when the Mayor does't support UCF and the business it brings.

i don't think they should be giving any of that money away, it should be saved in a rainy day fund because tourist tax dollars won't always come in much higher than expected. it could drop you know.

Randy Fine represents Brevard County and he has been the most openly hostile member of government towards UCF.

idk why anyone would get upset over this when it seemed like a long shot to begin with.
what does he have to do with orange county's board of comissioners

How bout you UCF fans pay for your facilities like every other university does?

My take away from today's meeting is that there are some Pro-UCF Commissioners and we might get some funding.

Adding space to the convention center doesn’t make sense to me given the size already. Renovations to improve the existing space would be a better use of funds. Other convention spaces are not located adjacent by to a theme park (Epic Universe), there’s no comparison.

Sinking hundreds of millions into a roofed stadium at the citrus bowl isn’t going to move the needle on landing a pro team or bowl games imo when we are competing with multi billion dollar nfl facilities. We’d have to build another stadium if we ever had the chance for an NFL Team. Yes, they could land more concerts but it’s still lipstick on a bandaid with how they renovated the space already to date. We’re stuck in tier 2 for big games and this budget won’t change the status quo.

I know a mayoral candidate most UCF alums living in Orange County will not be voting for. I also know a certain county commissioner (Mayra Uribe) who will garner tremendous support from UCF alums and students moving forward.

Last time I was at the Citrus Bowl was that 2016 Cure Bowl. It was entirely fine at that point for what it is used for. Some basic renovations and upkeep should be the game plan there to be revisited in a couple decades.

I just went to the Citrus bowl for the FSU/OU bowl game, sat in some really nice seating section with I guess would be club access. That place is actually really nice already, way nicer than when I had to piss in a trough with hundreds of other dudes when the Knights played there. It’s definitely nice enough to host a few events. Didn’t they put in hundreds of millions a few years ago for all the current upgrades? Seems like just throwing money away at this point.

Seems like they did 2/3 of what they wished to do. I do miss horse troughs though.

Its last renovation was a whole 2 years ago in 2021
