Eric Trump, Anthony Scaramucci, and others at the WH fell for spoof emails from an email prankster.

Some of it's worth a chuckle.

"Masquerading as Priebus, the prankster emailed Scaramucci's official account using a mail.com account on Saturday, the day after Priebus' resignation was announced.

"I had promised myself I would leave my hands mud free," wrote the fake Priebus, "but after reading your tweet today which stated how; 'soon we will learn who in the media who has class, and who hasn't', has pushed me to this. That tweet was breathtakingly hypocritical, even for you. At no stage have you acted in a way that's even remotely classy, yet you believe that's the standard by which everyone should behave towards you? General Kelly will do a fine job. I'll even admit he will do a better job than me. But the way in which that transition has come about has been diabolical. And hurtful. I don't expect a reply."

The very real Scaramucci responded: "You know what you did. We all do. Even today. But rest assured we were prepared. A Man would apologize
."

I wonder what Priebus did.

Social engineering continues to be one of the hardest things to protect against. As crazy as this story is, it's extremely common and spoof e-mails can be made to look very realistic. Looks like the snooper was trying to get a scoop by baiting them and it almost worked.

When do we start the investigations? THIS MUST BE RUSSIA. How many different agencies can we get to drop everything and form an investigation????

After all, we have no less than 6 different federal agencies and a Special Prosecutor currently investigating RUSSIA! all because dumbass Podesta opened a phishing email and clicked the link.

I thought the Dems were working with a Russian lawyer connected with Putin

Actually, it's really easy ...

You just use digital signatures, or some sort of intermediary when the originating sender lacks such, and refuse to take correspondence from anyone else. Problem solved.

Been teaching this to companies for nearly 2 decades.

Actually, they now are, given how the Russians are no longer Pro-Trump. It's going to come back to bite them too.

Security vs. Convenience
That will work but most companies do not go to that level because you lose too much convenience. Should the President and his staff be at that level? Absolutely.

Apparently Secretaries of State accessing SIPRnet and JWICS cannot be bothered with such. In Hillary's defense, Trump's staff isn't looking much better these days.

In all serious now ... it's actually none-too-difficult to have S/MIME or PGP/GPG signatures as standard. The first POTUS candidate that sports such will have my vote.
