In Arena Football, when the game goes to OT, you ALWAYS play defense first. If the other team scores a TD and an XP, you are expected to go for two and the win if you score a TD when you get the ball back.
Same philosophy here, minus the going for two and the win part.

In college you go second so you don’t settle for a FG when you need a TD. I doubt they score a TD on 1 more play but you have to give yourself a chance. He did not.
