UCF coach George O'Leary says he won't release his contract to public

I wouldn't release my contract details either.

I think the bigger story is the UCF admin basically telling the media "have at him" by putting the release on GOL.

this doesn't sound like a guy that will walk away on his own without being forced out by UCF. The local media is digging hard to hit him with more smear and now UCF is kind of letting him take the PR hit while saying "hey we tried"

"UCF is the only public university in the state that has declined to release coaches' contracts, stating the UCF Athletics Association that runs the Knights' athletics department operations is a Direct Support Organization that is not subject to public records laws. "

I think it's clear that the nail is in the coffin for old George. UCF basically threw him to the wolves and if that isn't an indication that he's on his way out, I don't know what is. But to be honest, I don't care so much as to what is in GOL as I do Key's. I want to see the wording for the "coach in waiting" and the buyout. $700,000 is going to suck.

from a SN article:

"UCF is a public university, but claims the UCF Athletics Association that runs the Knights' athletics operations is a Direct Support Organization not subject to public records laws.

However, the University of Florida, which also operates its athletics department as a Direct Support Organization, has always complied with the Orlando Sentinel when it requests coaches’ contracts. The last time UCF voluntarily released contract details on coaches was 2009."

seriously who the hell cares. this is as of a media-driven non-story-story as there is. is an respectable person really up in arms over this?

spoiler arert: GOL is a middle of the road paid college football coach.

It is pretty clear that UCF wants O'Leary out now. They basically put everything on George to voluntarily release his contract and he is not going to do it. So he will get that contract question after the Houston beatdown this weekend from the media. I'm pretty sure he had a $5 million dollar buyout from his last contract so I'm assuming that is still rolling over. That is a huge stinger here. Then if Key has a $700,000 buyout that is another huge stinger. So essentially almost 10% of what it cost to build the whole Bright House networks stadium we are going to pay these guys. Unreal!

and btw, the "huggers" comments are really immature.

I think everyone is trying to figure out the buyout number. I think it is the $5 million dollar number which would pay for 2 large HD video boards in the stadium. Or a good portion of adding a nice facade to the outside of the stadium and getting rid of the chain link fencing all over the place.

UCF has a Head Coach that has a history of not being honest and he just made a few denials to the media last week(about Key and buyouts). Ofcourse the media are going to keep digging and him refusing to release it will just add on to his perception. It's not a coincidence that there is always something with GOL and I don't think 'everyone is out to get UCF'.

Look at us talking about how we can't afford to fire our coach, upgrade facilities, etc. Wasn't the goal of spending all this money was to eventually generate more revenue?

We will need to payout large bloated contracts so stadium enhancements are out. It would be nice if George was like Steve and just call it quits when you know the team is lost, recruiting is lost, fans are lost, and all is left is milking UCF out of money.

Does he feel guilty cashing those large paychecks every few weeks with zero wins? and against schools like Tulane, Furman, and FIU.

That's the problem....we settle for mediocracy ....when do we take the next step? Hire a consistent winning coach! A younger coach? A coach that recruits and makes adjustments at half time?

I know...right.....sucking the life out of the program and drawing large amounts of money!!! There's gotta be some very winning type younger coaches that would come in!

Agreed. The end is near for both of them and it's going to cost UCF a ton of money under the best of circumstances and strap of for years.

However, there is no reason for either of them to release the details of their contracts. It's nonodys business. I wouldn't. No one would. Why should anyone?

Key has a buyout that includes him not getting the job as a head coach. It's ridiculously obvious.

Hey Key you're the worst OC in the nation. We're firing you with cause. No buyout.
And why would the school give GOL a deal to 2020 when he'll be 75+ and leave in the buyout of $5 mil? They just trusted him that he'd retire when the time came for that? He's a proven liar

If GOL really loves UCF, he'll resign with all the cash he's made over the years, and help UCF become better in football!.Unless he's a grumpy old fuddy duddy who's going to be mad at the world!

Wow. What a completely ignorant tweet. Sounds like a really smart guy... I've worked for private companies all my life and last time I checked me, my coworkers, my boss, thier boss, their boss, etc... never had to release thier employment contract to the public. This is no different. Does every nba, nfl, nhl, mls, etc... contract get released to the public. Nope. Details come out but not the actual contracts, unless as has been stated on here, there is specific legal language to do so and you sign it. This is about contracts, not perception. That's like saying you were involved in some court case where you signed an NDA or it had a gag order and since their is some public opinion to talk about it then you should just ignore it and have a press conference anyways.

How many people on here have gone around their office and made sure everyone knew how much you made in salary, bonuses, time off negotiated, etc.... ?

Coaches that made their G5 schools money - Urban Meyer, Kyle Whittingham, Gary Patterson, Chris Petersen.

concerning Key and the "coach in waiting". I'm not sure where I heard it from but if a school designates someone with that title that there are certain recruiting restrictions that come with it. Thus, schools avoid calling someone that so those rules don't kick in. Again, just thinking out loud here. Concerning O'Leary's contract I always though public contracts go under the Florida Sunshine Laws. But, I also don't care either other than know the buy out clause in it. My guess it is pretty high and one reason why O'Leary is pretty secure in his job. That is good and bad. This year it sucks as we all want to fire him. But, sometimes it is good to keep the coach even through a bad year. But, again, just blabbing. All I want is to beat Duh*Bulls. There should be something in his contract stating that he must beat Duh*Bulls or your out.

Yep. There's a difference between an organization saying, before you are hired, that your contract will become public ... and changing it later.

Key has a buyout that includes him not getting the job as a head coach. It's ridiculously obvious.
It's not so much "obvious" but "commonplace" in the industry.

Yes, I do fully expect Key to have a clause with a penalty for UCFAA, Inc. if he doesn't get the HC position. That's probably how we kept him from going to another program. As much as some of you wish he would, consider he did have interested parties in the past.

Whether some agree or not, or want to -- in hindsight -- which it didn't exist, it did, and for very logical reasons.

I think the bigger story is the UCF admin basically telling the media "have at him" by putting the release on GOL.
Nah. I don't blame the UCFAA, Inc. for the move. UCFAA, Inc. finally said "enough!" They merely removed themselves from the equation.

Besides, GoL, Key, et al. can take it. They are paid to take it. And they have a right to keep contract private.

Furthermore ...

Hey Key you're the worst OC in the nation. We're firing you with cause. No buyout.
Or a reduced one. This is why some people do want to see Key's contract. Because if it's a blind, any cause penalty for UCFAA, Inc. if he doesn't get the job, that is worthwhile scrutiny.

No one should write a contract like that. I distinctly remember the fallout between the Orlando (or Orange County) mayor, and the guy at MCO, and the taxpayers paid for it ... dearly! So if you are GKC, yes, we are understandably concerned.

But it is not the public's business. Sorry, but that "the public has a right to know, because UCF sucks this year" is pretty f'ing wrong in my view.

Release the contract! He doesn't want the truth to come out.......you can't handle the truth!
If the contract was designed to be public, then it would likely be very different. At the same time, if you Google around, some of O'Leary's past contracts are on the Internet. ;)

The Orlando media has long been anti-UCF and anti-GoL. And yes, the media is purposely polarizing.

In fact ... they get the lowest ratings from the 2 zip codes with the most UCFAA, Inc. GKC donors -- namely 32765 and 32766. So this is their way of raising viewership. Don't be one of the sheep. ;)

Unacceptable. We need to know how much Eng, K_L, BS and the rest of the nutthuggers are making.
"No Comment" ;)

BTW ... correction for my prior oversight on this:
UF also has a privately owned Athletics Association, and they too state ...

"it is not obliged to share coaches' contracts but opted to voluntarily comply with the media request."

I would include the National Media. Like I said the Orlando & National media are more anti-GOL than they are are anti-UCF. They are not going out of their way to just make crap up every Fall to hurt little Ole UCF

Not sure why GOL is making it so hard on himself. He has 5 games left. Announce your retirement and have fun coaching them. Make it a farewell tour, even have a "Thank you GOL night!"

This way he won't get the recognition that he deserves.

If anything this shows how awful it was even entertaining the idea of GOL as AD.

He cannot come off as more unlikable in the media and social relations. Sure its a situation where he has the right to keep it private. However, being more open and up front can make you look positive even when all the info that will come out is negative. Now you will just have the general public and media speculate and vilify more so. He can only save face by either resigning/retiring to avoid UCF paying the massive buyout or turning UCF in to a winning program before his contract expires.

Just like people hated the Queen after Princess Diana died.** Seriously, because that's the type gossip-level drama this BS has turned into. And you guys are eating up the hate wrapped all in it.

Sure, GoL could say and do some things ... but a lot of people will still never like him. Many will still hate him, and never give him credit for anything.

**SIDE NOTE: If you haven't seen it, "The Queen." I think some of the analogies fit very well with this situation.

A lot of coaches and a lot of media personalities do like and very much respect GoL.

Sure, you can find a number that totally negative to GoL. Of course, they are always negative about a lot of people, and GoL is just one of their biggest targets.

Currently, he is offerring nothing worth taking credit for and as usual unlikable off the field. Hence the current situation. It's not shocking why people call for his head soon as he under performs, to put it nicely. There are people you root for and support even when they don't succeed, GOL is just not that type of guy. He doesn't want to be that guy, he's never made a point to make friends with the fanbase. He does his job.

I don't know, Mikey. I really can't put you in the same group as the huggers because you have actually shown that you can see the light, especially after Furman.

Just let go of the nuts, ok? For once and for all. You just need a push and I'm going to do that for you at the ezu game, buddy. I have a beer with your name on it, ok?
