Quadric Bullard is working towards a big rebound in 2023.
After emerging as a starter at safety in 2021, Bullard saw 2022 cut short halfway through with a season-ending injury. He missed spring while continuing to recover and hopes to be cleared soon for full contact. In the meantime, he's doing everything else in practice.
Highlights from the interview:
During the spring, Bullard aimed to do everything possible to mentor the younger players and transfers.
After his sophomore year, much was made about Bullard's weight and the need to bulk up. At the beginning of the 2021 season, he weighed 160-165. At the end of the season, he was 150-155. His offseason a year ago was dedicated to bulking up - he weighed 185 last August.
Turns out, Bullard felt that was too heavy.
"My junior year, (my weight was) too high," Bullard said. "I couldn't move as well as I did my sophomore year."
The coaches are now content with Bullard playing at a lower weight. He's currently "pushing 170."
Asking about the defense and what changes we could see under Addison Williams, Bullard said the "defense is tailored to what the team needs and not what the coaches need."
He added forcing turnovers has been an emphasis.
"We're seeing DBs getting hands on balls and giving us more opportunities to be ballhawks and play to our strengths."
Bullard offered a few names that he's anxious to see play this year.
"I'm very eager to see Nikai Martinez. He's a young guy, very smart. I see him as a younger me. He started out at nickel and then moved to safety and is getting the grasp of the whole defense. Jireh Wilson and DeJordan Mask, both great athletes and mentors who are teaching the younger guys.
"In the linebacker room, I can't wait to see what Jason Johnson does. He performs on a different level.
"On the defensive line, Ricky Barber and Lee Hunter. I want to see them dominate up front. It's only been three practices, but Lee has showed outstanding effort. Seeing a guy that big move side to side, I know I can count on him to get to that ball.
"Josh (Celiscar) and Drop (Tre'Mon Morris-Brash), I always hold them to a high standard."
Bullard said it was a "dream come true" joining the Big 12.
"The goal is conference championship and nothing less," Bullard said. "We don't accept anything below the standard. The Big 12 Championship is where we're heading."
