Who would have thought that this year the defense would carry the team, especially since we are used to scoring more than 30 points a game. If I recall at the beginning of the year the biggest concerns was the defensive line and the secondary. It was difficult to watch the young secondary in the BYU game. It was great to see the growth from the young players on defense. Number 5# Ricky Barber was a great addition to the D-line. The secondary is young and playing the ball much better. I am really excited to see what Defensive coach Travis Williams is going to do after a year of recruiting.
On the other side of the ball finishing at 8-4 with a true freshman QB is a good year. I know folks were tough on Mikey this year, but the second half of the season he improved touchdowns to interceptions and made some good throws. I agree he needs to improve on making his reads, but that takes time to become a complete QB. I like what I saw with the backup RB and the O;ine was good with protection and opening holes for the RB.
In summary with new coaches and all the injuries I think the players showed improvement through the year.

I'd say 8-4 was par considering the circumstances, with the only blemish being the Navy game. Even with DG, I don't think we win Cincy or SMU realistically, the defense gave up too many points for us to keep up. But the DG transfer news does kill my enthusiasm going into the offseason, especially knowing the talent gaps in the team as is. Hoping its a matter of ripping off the bandaid and switching coaching staff/schemes and ideally getting some stability in the program versus a trajectory. Glad to see the recruiting class so far on paper looks decent though.

Yes, with DG leaving we could be potentially be back to breaking in another true freshman QB.

I'm glad Mr Socko made an early decision so we have time to look at options prior to signing day.

Considering everything, 8-4 is over achieving.....but still want a P5 bowl.

Big recruiting year with 2022 being another building year into 2023. I'm not holding my breath at this point for a 2022 Conference Championship game in the AAC; that's down the tubes with DG transferring right now. I'm looking forward to another big recruiting year next year as well. Do that big recruiting pajama party in June again :)

Note: There is the slight chance that we get another QB and RB on the transfer portal which makes us immediately highly competitive on offense next season.

This doesn’t really go anywhere, so just picked this thread….but how in the holy hell does this USF WR get 1st Team All Conference WR? He had a 41 rec 715 yd 2 TD stat line, shouldn’t have even been an honorable mention. Hard to take any All Conference selections of PFF seriously with picks like this.

BJ should have been all conference at WR. 8-4 record vs 2-10. How many games did he score a crucial touchdown when we ended up winning by less than a TD?

If politics is keeping us out, then they substitute USF for UCF. Announcers have mixed up USF and UCF before. Now AAC is doing it on purpose which is why we need out no later than 2023.

My thoughts at end of the year are that we underperformed. I was going into the season thinking we would be pretty good team. 8-4 is alright a record but should be considered a bad year for us. Like Gus says he is building a foundation. Whatever that means is just that....Probably one more year in the AAC, then off to the Big12. Recruiting is the key. UCF stands for opportunity and hoping the players see that and come to Orlando. I also hope we get lined up with an attractive bowl opponent. I may go although that Boca Bowl is still leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Heupel lost the team by then I think and BYU was a really good team and wanted it more.

Bowl selection is Sunday at Noon. We are ending the season with some great games lined up for Saturday.
