UCF Football: Gus Malzahn Press Conference - Boise State Week

He mentioned trying to play on a blue field before the game. I don't get it. Does playing on a blue field present problems that a normal field doesn't?

He said a lot that I agree with.

Gus talked about how Boise State, along with Oklahoma, have been the toughest places to win in college football over the past two decades. UCF play at both.

He also talked about putting an inferior opponent away early and not play down to their level is the mark of a good team. I agree with that. I will add taking advantage of other teams' mistakes.

I’m not that confident. Boise has a stellar home record, and we suck at night road games that are hyped up by the team. Case in point: East Carolina last year.

Exactly. 100! Not saying UCF will lose, but gotta think Boise State is the safer pick here.

Yes, they will wear blue uniforms and lay down on the field. Stuff like that

Does UCF playing a first game against a cupcake team while Boise playing a formidable opponent help our strategy/scheme?

In the sense, Boise had to expose their playbook against Washington, while we could have just run plays made up by JRPs finger on the back of the football to win vs Kent State.

UCF playing on Thursday helps more, otherwise I think Boise is more battle tested. Boise played a top QB and team and ready to fight. UCF just played a severely over matched opponent, and in recent years struggled when playing teams that they don't have a big athletic advantage over.

There are multiple ways to look at it.

Boise State saw an opponent that is better than what it will see Saturday.

Boise State is more gassed because it will have two less days to prepare.

Boise State has its back to the wall.

You don't know that. I watched both games and although Washington looked pretty good I can't say they are any better than UCF. Boise looked almost as most helpless than Kent State. U-Dub is ranked but that just says the pollsters think they are better. In reality they probably are better, but nobody knows at this point. I'll wait to see it on the field.

Boise State will be tuned up for UCF that's for sure. UCF had a good warm up also. Should be an interesting matchup. Washington basically did not use their run game hardly at all and basically passed over Boise.

Thankfully the game is on FS1 and not ESPN family of channels as I've got spectrum and disney blocked espn channels. I wanted to watch Clemson-Duke tonight but guess that ain't happening.

So at this point you would say Kent State and Boise State is comparable based on your observations.

I wasn't impressed with Kent State or Boise when I watched both teams. But, I can't say one is better than the other without seeing them playing each other is my point. Of course perception is that Boise is better than Kent State, but I was mentioning that we also don't know that Washington is better than UCF.

I'm currently watching Duke beating up on Clemson. So, I don't really know who the better team is at this point.

I am going out on a limb and saying an 11-2 team ranked in the Top 10, a team whose two losses were by a combined 15 points, a team currently on an 8-gane winning steak, a team whose offense the UCF head coach said was "probably the best in the nation" in his press conference this morning is better the UCF.

I know that's quite a leap by me, but I am taking the jump.

You could be right. But, I'm not buying it yet. Just like we don't know how good or bad UCF is with the Kent State. I can't say Washington is better than UCF at this point in time. They did look good against Boise, but they had no run game. How do we know how good Boise is with just one game? We will find out soon enough though.

The benchmark is 56-19. I doubt UCF beats Boise St by those numbers but we really don't know at this point in time.

fyi, Duke 21 Clemson 7 4th quarter. 10 minutes to go

Clemson ranked #9. Plenty of time for a comeback. But, who here thought Duke can beat Clemson?

Clemson has beaten Duke all over the field, but has done unspeakable things in the red zone on top of missing two field goals.

This does make UCF's loss in the bowl game look a lot better, though.

Clemson was 11-2 last year and currently ranked in the top 10. How can they be losing to Duke? A basketball school. :p Still time left though.

That new rule of keeping the clock running really helps speed up the game. I like it.

I really don't know. Clemson has 26 first downs to Duke's 14. Clemson has out gained Duke 386-320. Clemson has whiffed on four scoring opportunities. Duke was the recipient of the strangest targeting call I have ever seen to end a Clemson drive. Just weird game.

But it makes UCF's bowl loss a lot more respectable.

"I really don't know."

How you know Washington is better than UCF then? :p LOL

good night. Yea for Duke!

One last thing ...

Entering that game, Clemson was 108-0 all-time when rushing and passing for 200+ yards.

That, my friend, is perspective.

I, thus, concede that there is a 1 in a 108 chance UCF is better than Washington.

Not that I agree with everything AL1 posts, but I enjoy most of his/her contributions to this board.
Obviously a passionate and very knowledgeable college football fan. Knows way more about our own team than 99% of UCF fans and I can tell he does a lot of research on opposing teams.
Takes a lot time and puts a lot of thought into most of his posts and I’m often very impressed with what I read. Hope he never leaves and I think most of us appreciate him being here.
The more, the merrier… except for Loboturd. 😉

When asked about four former UCF quarterbacks throwing touchdowns passes, Gus should have responded "But were the DBs looking back on all those throws?"

(Apparently not. ;-)

Gabriel literally went after #0 Hodges in the first highlight on the second play of the game.

"Gabriel tried to connect with him (Anthony) twice more. Beaten on the route both times, the Arkansas State secondary elected to take pass interference penalties rather than let Anthony walk into the end zone, giving the Sooners another 30 yards in field position."

Another former UCF quarterback with a touchdown.

The over was 55.5, so Joey made a lot of people happy.
