here’s why it’s actually ok (but frustrating) UCF pretends to be poor all the time

From Reddit:

UNLV athletic director Erick Harper informed the Board of Regents that the athletic department, which is $26 million to $31 million in debt, can only fund the first two years of football coach Dan Mullen’s five-year, $17.5 million contract. To cover the remaining three years, Harper hopes to raise money through donations and increased football revenue.

UNLV has seen a boost in football interest, selling 970 more season tickets for 2025 and increasing ticket prices, generating $2.5 million in revenue so far. However, regents expressed skepticism about relying on fan-generated revenue long-term. The school may also receive $19 million to $24.8 million from the Mountain West due to conference changes, though this is tied to ongoing litigation.

The department projects spending over $24 million annually on athletics personnel through 2029. Meanwhile, men’s basketball coach Kevin Kruger’s job is uncertain, but firing him before June would require a costly $2.35 million buyout. UNLV is also receiving $3 million from Purdue in installments as part of former football coach Barry Odom’s contract buyout.
