Was 2013 a fluke? Where do we go from here?

As I think about the success we’ve had in recent years I’m starting to think it was an anomaly, maybe just plain luck. We did after all win a lot of games in the last minute. Even some on miraculous plays (Temple, Memphis) the only game we really looked like world beaters was the Fiesta Bowl. Even last year if you take away the plays at the end of the UH and ECU games…well you get the picture. We did have a lot of talent during those couple of years. Maybe it was Kelly, maybe we just stumbled into it, I don’t know, but that kind of talent no longer exists on our team, at least not in significant numbers. It’s true we have had a lot of injuries and are very young and this is a rebuilding year. That being said we should be 3-2, at worst 2-3. No excuses.

The saddest part of this all is that we were on our way (remember when UCF and FSU were the top 2 teams in Florida?). We were the class of our new conference and just two short months ago a B12 invite seemed almost imminent. I now fear we have lost all we have gained and are on are way back to being irrelevant once again. The program has been set back 10 years and it doesn’t look like it will recover anytime soon.

Where do we go from here? We can’t go back there. We’ve been on top and I can’t stomach being a bottom feeder in the AAC for the foreseeable future. I’m just not sure I see any quick way out of this mess. Even if GOL and crew were replaced by the next Nick Saban it will take several years to recover and it may be too late by then. Are we done? Is there hope?
