Since we hear...wait, wait, wait. The half @ss shutdown isn't doing much. New York state alone has more cases than the rest of the countries. We should have quarantined the vulnerable instead of the entire population.

Half ass shutdowns flatten the curve too slowly as the economy tanks. Full shutdowns work, but Americans wouldn’t do it and governors wouldn’t enforce it.

We will be talking about this debate for decades. No answer doesn’t have flaws. You have an argument, but I’m sure it has flaws too.

NYC should have had an Italian style lockdown IMO

"Flattening the curve" is a farce. Its a term that makes people think fewer will die but all it means is we spread out the deaths over a longer period of time. The whole point of this was to keep the hospitals from being overwhelmed, not save lives

Flattening the curve means fewer new cases and less deaths. Overall cases will become less as people die or recover. When people see this, fear will go down. It’s a sign of recovery and it’s already started

There is no proof that when it opens up it doesn't expand back in two weeks. Might as well get herd immunity and not drag this on for 2 years. Keep the sick and unhealthy inside.

There’s really no proof of anything. Even immunity, is there?

Nobody has tried your theory, so who knows
Maybe it would work and maybe it wouldn’t

Correct but we do know we are still getting a crap load of cases and destroying the economy at the same time.

That’s why we are opening it up slowly. See.. there isn’t something that you’re mentioning
Fear

Fear can’t be just reversed by locking down the elderly. The only thing that will improve fear is better numbers or a vaccine

Also, don’t underestimate the wealth of people over 65. Sure., they don’t all work, but the wealthy are generally older people

Vaccine is 12-16 months minimum. The fear gets reduced when your allowed to go to the beach or get a haircut and browse stores. Doesn't help that death numbers are being inflated.

Not having the hospitals overwhelmed does save lives. Obviously people would still die, but more people would die if they can't get sufficient treatment due to lack of doctors or equipment available.

Well you are about to get your wish. Several states announced they are "opening up" by April 30th, so we will see how it works out.

It's not the opening that is the problem, it's the freedom of travel. Lock down Florida for 2 weeks and then close the borders.

The model that predicts 60k deaths says social distancing until you have 0.3 deaths per million each day. That is 110 deaths in the country.

Any earlier and that 60k, which is already a joke, becomes a much bigger joke.

I have a bad feeling about this.

This. We fought and won a world war while going through the Spanish flu.
