Ironically, I think that one of the strategies that Republican-controlled State legislatures have been quietly doing over the past 50 years is turning out to 'bite them in the butt.'

In more and more conservative states (like the one I live in) gerrymandering has slowly but steadily succeeded in creating districts where the Republican is a lock to stay in office. This means these politicians don't have to be concerned with representing 'both sides.' They can play to their party's base without any real worry about being voted out of office.

But here's the rub: It has meant that the only danger they face is being voted out in their State's primary election. So these Republicians only fear is a bigger "Red Meat" primary challenger. That means they have worry about being outflanked on their extreme right rather than by moderates or progressives on the left.

The result is a party that continues to push further and further right --- as a act of self-preservation --- at the expense of being competitive in nationwide elections.
