This isn't a new phenomenon. Growing up outside of Baltimore I would go to Colts games with my dad and my grandfather. My dad always stood for the National Anthem, but my grandfather wouldn't. Everyone around us would stand and my grandfather wouldn't - he would just sit. Both my dad and grandfather were champions of the civil rights movement and they both always did everything they could to fight for equality. Even though they were both equally staunch in their beliefs, my dad stood for the National Anthem, but my grandfather sat. Admittedly it was a little embarrassing at times. I asked my grandfather several times to please stand with us, but he would just look at me and shake his head "no". No matter how much I pleaded with him, he just WOULD NOT stand. Probably close to 50 football games. He passed away without me ever being able to ask him the question that was all-too-important to me, "Why?" My dad said it had something to do with my grandfather losing both of his legs in WWII and being confined to a wheelchair, but I'm not sure I buy that.
