Would you be in favor of expansion and adding two teams to the Big 12? Or would there be other avenues you would rather take to get a championship game?
“I’m always adaptable to change. I don’t want to ever close the door and say ‘No, I’m not in favor of expansion’ or ‘Yes, I’m in favor.’ You have to evaluate something on its totality. If it happened to be the right institutions that didn’t impact our revenue resources we get from the conference, those could be possibilities that could sway my vote one way or another in saying ‘This is something we need to look at.’ You have to look at it as there is always change for one reason or another, so you always have to be open to look at it. I’m always open to look at it. That doesn’t always mean I would be in favor of one situation, but another situation I could be in favor. I don’t want to close the door and be out there saying I’m in favor or I’m not in favor of expansion. It’s exploring it and if it’s the right institutions, then we would consider it. It’s usually even a level above me. Obviously, I’d have conversations with President Gee here, but those decisions are ultimately made at the presidential level among the 10 current member institutions of the Big 12. I think those things will continue to be discussed. I think you all as media will continue to look at it. But right now, with 10 institutions, I think we’re in a great spot. We’ve talked about it as the league’s athletic directors. We’re the only conference that plays everyone within the conference. We were right there on the verge of possibly having two teams make it into the first College Football Playoff. If Ohio State didn’t win the way it did, do you get TCU? Do you get Baylor? We were on the verge right there. Now, all of the sudden that deck of cards turned the other way. But we were right on the verge of having two teams in the College Football Playoff. I think we’re sitting in a very good situation right now as a conference as a whole.”
