When Ezekiel Stephan became ill in 2012 his parents allegedly didn't take him to a doctor.

The 19-month-old boy from Alberta, Canada, was reportedly treated at home by his parents, David and Collet. The Stephans pursued a treatment of natural supplements including whey protein, ginger root, olive leaf extract, horse radish root, juice, frozen berries and water with maple syrup. According to reports, they pointedly refused to seek medical treatment even as their son's condition worsened,and he became "lethargic" and "stiff," the Canadian Broadcast Corporation reported. The boy was only airlifted to a hospital once he stopped breathing.

I agree although there's a small part of me that doesn't want the intrusion of the gubment telling me how to raise my child. I have to think that's because I'm not stupid enough to intentionally do something to harm my kids.

I get the outrage here, but the kid died of meningitis, something kids don't get vaccinated for until they are closer to being teenagers, not 1.5 years old. Granted, the parents are probably devastated at the outcome, but their stance on vaccination isn't the cause of their child's death. Their natural medicine approach is.

Fair enough, although I think the same sentiment still stands if you're watching your child suffering and dying and still refuse to get medical treatment because you, as a medical layperson, "feel" that holistic cures are the way to go. So screw those two dangerous idiots and I hope they won't be allowed to make any decisions in the future that impact other people.

Viral meningitis, yes. However, due to the severity of his symptoms, many of us in the pro-vax community believed he had bacterial meningitis, which Hib and PCV most certainly protects against. I don't know Canada's immunization schedule, but if it's anything like the WHO or CDC schedule, both start at 2 months and the series ends around 12-16 months. Had Ezekial's parents been responsible and vaccinated him, he likely would have had full immunity to what he caught and no medicine, traditional or alternative, would have been necessary.

I would agree the media is focusing a bit much on his vaccination status when it is immaterial to the legal case against his parents. However, the parents are totally trying to deflect away from their gross negligence and making this a referendum on vaccination, as well. Besides, I have found most anti-vaxxers views on alternative medicine and vaccinations cannot be seperated; they go part and parcel together.

And I had a friend who got cancer, and went thru the treatments and died 3 mos later. I just don't get the process.

I don't understand the reason unless he is not vaccinated. If your kid is vaccinated, he is safe and it is the non-vaccinated kids parent's problem. If your kid (or one of his friends) can't be vaccinated because of allergies or whatever reason then keep away the crazies

There's a percentage of people whose vaccines don't take and you basically don't find out unless you come down with the illness. Which is why herd immunity is still a very important thing.

If you have an infant, I think there are certain vaccines in which you have to wait to give to them. So, in the meantime, yeah I wouldn't want to expose my infant to whatever.

Murder requires intent to kill which I'd doubt they could prove. Manslaughter is more appropriate since you only need to prove gross negligence.

Manslaughter also carries much lighter sentences.
