I'm sure this board of super-important-elitists think its beneath them...but for the normal people. How have your airbnb experiences been?

Funny you put this on here. I was going to do the same thing. I am looking at a house in the keys for a few days this summer.

We used it last year with a group of friends to rent an IRB house for the July 4th weekend. It was really easy, ended up being a great house, and there were plenty of reviews for the house and the owner to give you some assurance.

It was a 3 bedroom house that we rented for $270 a night. that's nothing when split 3 ways.

Compare that to the Clearwater Beach Hyatt that wants like $450 a night for a single room.

That said, I'm sure there are some sketchy listings and owners to avoid.

I'm looking into places for a long weekend to DC this summer to see the history stuff & a Rays/Nats game. Nearly booked a place on some trips to NYC recently, but scored better deals on Marriott with the perks of membership.

I thought I read that Airbnb was essentially illegal in NYC since they don't permit rentals less than 29 days in duration.

I've used Airbnb all over the world. Fantastic experiences, some strange, but still better than hotels.

Prague - absolutely amazing place in the old town - dead center of everything - could not be beat
Amsterdam - a place right along one of the canals - gorgeous, unique - again, couldn't be beat at the price
Ireland - a few rentals in Dublin, both had their quirks, but again they were awesome

I've also used VRBO - but really prefer Airbnb

The only issue with AirBnB is they have some pretty odd privacy policies. They take a lot of your information, and who knows what they do with it.

FlipKey is great, as well. I'm renting a 4 bedroom place, a block from the beach, in San Sebastian, Spain, this summer. Saved a ton of money by getting an apartment versus hotel rooms, and will have a large place for 5 travelers.
I like FlipKey because they do their reviews through Trip Advisor, so they seem to have more reviews.

Color me shocked youve used it (or a similar service). I thought you had a bazillion miles at 5 star hotels so you would never need the service.

Anyway, just booked a place in downtown Seattle area (Belltown) for like $170/night. That may sound expensive for Airbnb but consider hotels in downtown are all $300+ and in this case I get a full studio with a kitchen and a view.

Next up is Vancouver. Want to be downtown and entire condos are $100/night range.

But check this place out in Atlanta, of all places. It's a luxury treehouse. It looks amazing and it belongs to my boss's neighbor. It goes for $350/night on Airbnb and is right in Buckhead. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1415908

I had multiple 2-day rental options when I went through the site. Ended up at Marriott because I got a 2-room suite for a base rate thanks to status.

I do whatever is the best option for me.

I'm using points for the rest of my trip in Spain, but wanted a place in a certain location in San Sebastian. Couldn't really get it with points, so I checked FlipKey and got the apartment. I also needed three rooms in every stop in Spain (Vitoria, Pamplona, San Sebastian, and Madrid). I ran out of Marriott and Chase points with the other nights.

I was just in Seattle a few weeks ago. Got The Edgewater hotel, on a
pier overlooking the Puget Sound, for $85 a night on Priceline. The place was awesome.

I've seen that treehouse. Almost booked it last time in I was in Atlanta. I am looking at a house in Key Largo overlooking Pennekamp park that comes with use of kayaks and paddle boards and you can book the use of their fishing boat as well or they will take you out. $120 a night with 40+ reviews all 5 star. I am thinking about taking the kids down for fishing and snorkeling for a few days.

I used Airbnb when I was commuting to Bradenton each week. It was great, I couldn't have booked a decent hotel for anywhere close as cheap.

Great in Argentina. Lots of problems in London on several different trips with different owners promising more than they delivered, despite mostly good reviews. No soap or towels, etc. Worked will Thailand, but the hotels are so cheap it is unnecessary and you actually end up paying more in some cases.

speaking of the Keys has anyone spent time at North Pine Key? I saw a show on the keys and was surprised how nice the stretch of beach looked compared to Key West and it's a good spot to scuba.

Haven't tried it just yet. Just introduced to me by my travel blogger daughter about a month ago. May use for our first night out in California in September (other nights already taken care of with timeshares, hotel points and one MUST DO hotel), but my husband's a little iffy about it. My only concern is that I can more easily cancel a hotel room that night if the first timeshare has someone who leaves early and they can get me in a night earlier than the normal Sunday check-in. I think the idea of it is awesome, and I think there will be some family members looking into this for my stepdaughter's wedding next spring.

I've used VRBO and Homeaway before. Great stuff. I've not used Airbnb to book anything, but it's basically the same thing as the others. Got a house in the Keys for way less than a hotel would have cost - and it came with a dock for my boat and access to a pool and beach club. Got a house in Myrtle Beach with a pool for a large group for way less than 4 rooms at a hotel would cost for a week. VRBO has become part of my vacation plans for a couple of years now.

And it's good for finding violators of City code too. Like someone else posted about NYC, it may actually be illegal in some areas, but that doesn't stop people from trying. It's usually a code violation with a fine for the 1st offense. I just found a house in my neighborhood that was using this for over a year (according to the reviews), where it is not legal to rent out for short term. And yes, I ratted them out to the proper authorities.
