ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF men’s basketball head coach Donnie Jones added to his staff this week, announcing the hiring of long-time NBA assistant coach Tom Sterner as the Knights’ Director of Program Development on Wednesday.

“Tom brings great coaching experience,” Jones said. “He’s been at the highest level, coaching in the NBA for 25 years with some great coaches. He understands culture, he has a lot of basketball wisdom and we’re excited for him to bring all of that to our program.”

Sterner has spent the last 25 years working on the coaching staffs of the NBA’s Orlando Magic, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, Philadelphia 76ers and most recently the Toronto Raptors.

During his time in the NBA he has worked under great coaches like Chuck Daly, Doc Rivers, Rick Carlisle, Brian Hill, Dwane Casey, Matt Guokas and Eric Musselman. Sterner has also had the pleasure of coaching some legendary players in Shaquille O’Neal, Dirk Nowitzki, Grant Hill, Jason Kidd and Tracy McGrady.

“I’m really fortunate and thankful to Donnie for having me on his staff,” Sterner said. “I want to represent the university in a very positive way and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work at the collegiate level. This is a great learning opportunity and I’m proud to represent Donnie, the program, Coach O’Leary and President Hitt in the best possible light.”
