Big 12 Expansion Update...

What kind of gimmicks does UCF have?

Gimmicks: I was referring to all the orchestrated commercially-sponsored crapola meant to fill every timeout and pause in the action. That time used to be the sole province of cheerleaders to keep the fans focused and riled up, not distracting them with silly contests, promotions, and scoreboard kiss closeups. The game on the field becomes an afterthought. It's bad enough that the stands are preoccupied by older fans showing each other videos of their grandkid while younger alums are monitoring the FSU game or baseball playoffs. Oh, guess I'm just griping about our overabundant media access. At least there are no "amazing cat videos" at the game...yet.

I got a standing O when I mounted my wife on the kiss cam! I also just called Danny White to see if we can get some cat videos.

In yesterday's earning call, Disney anounced they had acquired a $1 Billion stake in the streaming platform used by MLB, HBO and others and will be setting up an ESPN streaming services.

I wonder how this will impact Expansion as clearly this is designed to get those cord-cutting subscribers back and they will need game inventory and content to justify the subscription. Suddenly their balking at pro rata revenue increases in light of shrinking subscription numbers might no longer be relevant.

It's a good move. No way to get them "back" as an each year more and more never had a cord to cut in the first place. It's a demographic, cultural, and technological trend. That's why NASCAR in Daytona was in such a rush to self-fund their total overhaul to add WiFi to appeal to millennials after suffering a severe drop in their aging attendance base. As streaming media replaces cable and satellite in home man caves, too, networks and cable packages aren't the future. It may even force conferences to renegotiate their long-term deals with media.

Here's how I know Fox is gaining the upperhand in convincing the Big12 to take UCF

Confidential: Expansion is not helping Big 12 recruiters

Insider article, but you just need to read the public part.
no one mentioning Tulane but they would be a unique pick that I would be ok with being paired with UCF.

I'd much rather go to New Orleans and take in a game in their new intimate OCS & eat some amazing food all weekend vs going to Cincinnati

Yeah, I damn sure wouldn't go to that shithole Cincinatti.

This quote does not sound like it is trying to convince the B12 to take UCF to me "Having a Big 12 member school in Orlando and New Orleans to spread the league's brand has to sell well with recruits, right? Think again.". If anything the hidden piece of the article has to be a bashing.

Tulane? Now I know they aren't planning to expand! Already tiny and dismally poor New Orleans lost over half its population after Katrina. Even its NBA team fled to miniscule Oklahoma City. It's crime level is far, far worse than Orlando, the murder capital of Florida. And now the state's underwater literally as well as fiscally due to record low oil prices.

Right: an ESPN hit piece on UCF...
ergo Sublime argues FOX must be making headway on our behalf.

Their NBA team never left. The franchise moved from Seattle to OKC

ASK WEST VIRGINIA! Sorry to yell, but the idea of playing in Florida is undeniably important in getting recruits. Yet again, I'll say when W. Virgina played in the Big East, hitting usf every now and again, they build at least a third of their team with Florida guys. They alone, had more players than the entire Big 12. It may have changed now, but saying the Big 12 can recruit Fla without playing there is saying having 1 or 2 Fla players on your team is the goal.

Urban Meyer pushing Cincy for Big 12 (cbs article) 2 great lines from it. " "I'm saying that without making all the research necessary to really make that comment. That's more of as a fan ... and my sister is a [vice] provost there, so I know that school very well." i.e. I don't know much about the school, yet I know the school very well.

BINGO[thumb2]
FOX wants UCF badly! They want to get their foot in FL, which is really helping our case.

ESPN already owns the rights to UCF and they aren't thrilled with the idea of paying 20x what they are paying now for UCF, but the kicker is they are owned by Disney and Disney has our back (at least so I hear), so we will see what happens.

I still believe WDW's potential influence on this whole thing is minimal to none, no matter how much Kilogridis or Nunis supports us. ESPN and WDW are completely separate business entities under the Disney umbrella, and while Disney does like to push cross-functional synergy, I just dont see much reason for them to work together here. ESPN is hemorrhaging money and subscribers while the parks are earning record profits. If they're not seeing any financial value in UCF in the Big 12 (as short-sighted as that is), they're not going to take a bath just so WDW can get some marginal attendance boosts.

Cinci and BYU because everything else is way more complicated and money matters more than political correctness.

NCAA needs to work out playoff system for football. Streaming access to football will continue to kick ESPN's tail and level the playing ground. :)

Espn is far from hemorrhaging money. Matter of a fact it is the most profitable division even with losing subscribers. They just gave the big 10 a huge raise.

I'm resigning myself to the fact we aren't getting in.

We will get into a P5 someday. It's inevitable. This big ass train is rolling down hill. It's not going away. Our moment will come. It just won't be this year.

Probably a safe bet. I have decided that i will NOT be disappointed by an bunch of self serving old blowhards.

Best article yet. The procedure eerily resembles the rules for "Lost" which seems most fitting. The "cut" is almost like schools getting voted off the island.
