Doesn't seem that ridiculous. She isn't saying you can't use the terms. She's saying that the class is about studying differences in people, and being intolerant and purposely offensive is not tolerated.

What we need is to build a wall, put military and voluntary personnel on our border who will stop (and shoot, if necessary) any illegals who try to enter this country. We need to devote more resources to finding and deporting illegals in this country including any illegals who are currently in prison, and fine any businesses/corporations which hire illegal immigrants....not treat them with dignity - yes undocumented worker, no undocumented worker, how much sugar would you like in your tea?

A lot of liberal hair splitting and defense behavior in this thread. The problem isn't limited to one campus or one teacher as a few responses above suggest. The University of Tennessee recently put out a guide encouraging faculty and students to forego the use of the words he and she in all situations, because it is gender specific. They suggest xe, xem, xyr, but don't really provide an explanation how the use of the words isn't labelling just like he, she, their. When too many people called bullcrap on that in the press and I imagine about the time the legislature called and said be ready for a hearing, the school put out a statement saying it was just a suggestion for students. The statement didnt mention that the "suggestion" was approved by someone who reports directly to the President and that by "suggesting" it, the school was endorsing the policy of using words that aren't part of the English language something college students are generally taught to avoid. They were also silent on why a suggestion for students included procedures for faculty members on how to handle the first week of classes. They also didnt explain how decisions get made on a college campus these days. This wasn't something that somebody put out behind their bosses back. Or that someone approved and an underling released without senior policy makers being aware of it. Every effing thing on a college campus is discussed to no end for months or years and everyone and their dog has to look at it and comment. That's just part of the culture of inclusion. There is no doubt in my mind that the President of that University and all the major players on the payroll knew exactly what was in that pamphlet. The question is whether they had the courage or political mettle to call BS on the radicals who wanted to publish it until it was clear that outside forces were going to make heads roll and their school was laughing stock. My sense is no, in part because of speech climates like the one in the syllabus above.

In addition to practicing law, I teach at an undergraduate school. It is a private Catholic university, so it doesnt have a lot of the issues on the topic of transgender. But I do talk daily or weekly to lots of different folks at lots of different campuses and they are all telling me similar stories and it is mostly brand new. Like not even on the radar on their campus six months ago. Which is weird. For the reasons above, hot button things like this are around for awhile before they become a big deal on multiple campuses. One of my more sane friends is convinced it is the Soviets again, who we know from documents revealed after the fall of the Iron Curtain purposefully funneled millions on to college campuses in the USA in the 1960s and 1970s trying to destabilize the country. It almost worked. About the time Nixon had to called the 101st and circle the White House with city buses to keep the crowds out, we changed the laws and started putting those people in prison who were circulating destabilizing information or "community organizing" on campus. With today's political correct environment, that is tougher to do. I'll leave to you to decide if he is nuts. There is probably some truth to his views. Our relations with Russia are certainly colder now that we've hit the Reset Button.

I will say that in the last two years they have changed our diversity training and sexual discrimination training, supposedly to comply with federal regulations. Its pretty offensive stuff if you are a man. One exercise told us that we had to stop and think about the times we have made women feel threatened of sexual assault, then write them down in the box provided. We didnt have to turn the worksheet in, but it started with the assumption that every man has either purposefully put women in fear of sexual assault or is somehow culpable for how another person feels. No use of the word "when you may have" or other qualifying language. The paragraph clearly and unequivocally was based on the premise that ALL American men are responsible for women feeling uncomfortable. One guy quit rather than complete the training, which is what the exercise has in mind, I imagine. He was replaced by a woman and there are no men in that department anymore.

I love the term "gender assigned at birth" and how there is a strong movement to have this applied to everyone. There are extremely rare cases where gender is assigned at birth. For everyone else on the planet, gender is assigned at conception. The opinions of doctors and social activists have absolutely no bearing on that.
