For most of the history of America,“a sweet, wholesome, middle-class, All-American, "Mom and Apple pie" family” absolutely included long guns in the household.
There is a Grand Canyon-wide difference between a homeowner with long guns locked up in a gun cabinet in the past and the Rambo wanna-bes who own f*king assault rifles like the AK-47 and the AR-15 today.

It’s not difficult to get a basic understanding of firearms so that you don’t look like a complete idiot when you start making arguments for banning them. I just don’t understand why so many gun control authoritarians can’t be bothered to learn even the most elementary of concepts.
The best thing you can do is just take anti-gun nuts out to the shooting range. Have them shoot a .223 for a while and they'll think it's fun. Then have them shoot a .50 S&W. All of a sudden they realize how stupid it is to ban the gun that they thought was fun to shoot.
C for handguns and D for rifles and shotguns growing up. As a parent I go with C.
