That's been my point since the 2nd month of lockdown. It's throw sh-- at a wall and mandate it before it even sticks.

The purpose of universal masking isn't to protect the wearer - it's to reduce community wide transmission rates.
To follow up though - this isn't true. They aren't "useless" for the wearer. There's numerous studies that have evaluated the % of aerosols various types of masks filter. You don't get sick from inhaling a single viral particle - you need some concentration of particles to get an infectious dose. So even if your mask only captures 10% of the aerosols, that's still a little bit more wiggle room before you get infected.

Especially among the irresponsible vaccinated since before, and even more so after, the CDC tri-flip.

But the actual data ranges (generally) from 15% to 85% capture of aerosols in the studies I've looked at. It's not unreasonable at all to say the average crappy mask is reducing aerosols by ~50% - which logically provides the wearer a reasonable benefit.Effectively useless would be more accurate then.

Re Masks: If we can't have a conversation w/ masks on, then why are we recommending them in schools? Teachers and students speak for hours on end in a classroom, would that not be similar? Again, masks are better than wearing nothing, fine. However, no one truly knows how much better than 0 a cloth mask is. I've seen studies sanctioned by the WaPo done by Duke university show very little value and in some cases (gaiters) being worse than actually wearing nothing.
Yes there are some masks (like the study on Gaiters) that can increase aerosols when you cough or sneeze vs no masks. But again, if 90% of the population is wearing a mask that captures 50% of aerosols, and 10% are wearing a mask that doubles the aerosols, you'd still be coming out ahead.
And a cloth mask is substantially better than zero. I assume (from reading various studies) it's around 50% of aerosols on average for generic cotton masks.
