HEALTH EXPERTS: WYOMING’S COVID SURGE IS ‘TIP OF THE ICEBERG’

CASPER, Wyo. – Casper health experts held a press conference on Wednesday afternoon at the Wyoming Medical Center to emphasis the troubling trends occurring in the state with COVID-19.

Wyoming’s cases are routinely breaking records, and the WMC currently has the highest number of COVID patients its seen since the start of the pandemic in March.

According to WMC interim CEO Dr. James Bleicher, M.D., the hospital entered a “code orange” this morning, which is just below the top “code red” as far as seriousness.

“At 6 a.m. we had 149 patients upstairs which puts us at near-capacity, and we had 17 people holding in the Emergency Room,” he said, adding that long-term staffers have never seen that number in the ER.

Montana Hospitals Facing Staff Shortages Amid COVID-19 Surge

As COVID-19 cases across the state surge, the number of available hospital beds for COVID and other patients is quickly becoming a concern. But a shortage of health care workers to staff and watch over patients in those beds is already a problem in some areas of the state.

...

KRH isn’t alone in its staffing struggles. Robin Haux with the Montana Nurses Association explains staffing is becoming just as much, if not more of an issue than available beds for medical facilities statewide.

"Today alone, not to call out any of our facilities, I know one facility that has over 40 employees that are out on quarantine right now."

Haux says the nurses association is asking local nursing unions to encourage their members to take extra shifts and the association is also helping state health officials get the word out about the Montana Mutual Aid System.

"This a callout for medical professionals in Montana that are needed to assist during the COVID-19 pandemic. So we’re basically creating a volunteer pool."

IDAHO AND EASTERN OREGON HEALTH CARE LEADERS 'DEEPLY CONCERNED' ABOUT SURGE IN CORONAVIRUS CASES

A quarter of the patients hospitalized at St. Luke's Magic Valley this week were infected with COVID-19.

BOISE, Idaho — Physicians from some of Idaho and eastern Oregon's largest health care organizations on Tuesday shared what they're seeing when it comes to coronavirus cases.

“Healthcare providers across the state of Idaho are deeply concerned about the increase in COVID-19 prevalence within our state and local health districts,” said Dr. Steve Nemerson, the chief clinical officer for Saint Alphonsus.

According to Nemerson, a slight bump in cases at the outset of the pandemic back in March was controlled by the governor's stay-at-home order. Then, in late June and early July another, bigger surge occurred, but that was controlled by the mask mandates and public pleas for physical distancing.

Now, we're seeing another significant uptick.

“What’s most frightening about this is two things: one, the position from where we're starting,” Nemerson said. “We're not starting from near zero, we're starting at a moderate prevalence in the hospital”

...

All of the physicians on Tuesday's call said we can get control of this new surge in cases, but we need to re-focus our attention on basic preventative measures and as we move into the holiday season, West Valley Medical Center's chief medical officer Dr. Richard Augustus said the public has to accept that this year will be different.

The physicians are also urging everyone to get a flu shot now so they don't get COVID-19 and the flu. In the Magic Valley, Kern said they are already seein g people get co-infections between coronavirus and influenza

Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Eastern Oregon. Is this political posturing as well?

I'm in Boise, we'll be fine. Do these other areas have the capacity to deal with this?

It's Spiking in many places. This is not looking good especially with flu season Starting soon. I took 6 months off. I will return in November. The situation is not where I wanted it to be. I can last 1 more month max. I may wait till November to decide before returning to work. Those states don't, but hoping other states can help.

That goodness. I wait on pins and needles for Dr Kightline’s words of wisdom. Vaccine? Brilliant! Thank goodness we have you for advice!!

Same guy who said this would be "over and forgotten about in a few weeks" back in February.

These people are just plain idiots. You can't reason with them any more you can reason with a toaster.

I have heard that toasters are pretty reasonable. You put bread in, push down a lever, and it makes toast. No questions asked. Reliable and reasonable.

Has Covid is reached your neck of the woods in San Quentin yet?
