Head coach Bret Bielema statement: "Coach Gibbs has resigned from his position on the Illinois coaching staff and will be temporarily stepping away from coaching for medical reasons. I love this brag about him:

"The Knights won six games in their first season in the Big 12 and played in the Gasparilla Bowl behind a defense that ranked in the top-five in the conference in passing yards allowed, pass efficiency defense, scoring defense and sacks."

Umm, he was our linebackers coach - wouldn't rushing yards per game be a better measure of his performance than any of these? Where did we finish there? Oh yeah, dead last.

The best case scenario is David Gibbs returns to UCF as a defensive analyst to be with his son Hudson, who is still on the team. David Gibbs has a standing offer to re-join Illinois as a defensive analyst. I think he will be willing to return to UCF in that role before he remains in Champaign.

Per a 247 article, "Bielema didn't give details on Gibbs' health but said the issue was "new but not all that new." Bielema met with Gibbs and his family over the weekend when the decision to step down was made. Illinois announced Gibbs' resignation on Monday. Bielema kept open the door for Gibbs to return to the team, potentially as an analyst, if his medical condition improves."
