And excuse me for believing a State Defense Force is a quaint relic of a bygone era. Florida needs to spend money on an SDF like it needs a hole in the head. And most of the existing ones are a joke. Back in the late 1980s, the governor of Utah had to fire 31 officers for creating an SDF full of neo-nazis, mental patients, and felons. Look it up -- I kid you not.
Can they be helpful during a natural disaster like a hurricane? YOU BETCHA! But it seems to me Florida is better off expanding its existing national guard than creating a whole new -- and expensive -- entity to 'help' them.
