E3

Correct, if you check the developer interview however, the plan was to hit mobile first and then PC/XBone, the reverse of the usual route. There's already a MOD community gearing up to make an NCAA mod for JM.
sounds like a good plan but probably relies on the mobile game to make money to fund a PS4/XB1 title - which is no small challenge.

they might be ahead of this already (again...was on vacation and am not up to date) but its a long road

Having talked with a number of people keeping an eye on it, the goal is to have a PC/XBone cross-platform release as the game is also being ported for DirectX 12...also will appear on Windows Mobile devices...which will be Win 10.

So is it gonna release before, at the same time or after Madden? Pretty much, all their sales depend on that IMO.

... new Joe Montana NFL 2k16 will be the first games that feature it.
I guess I've been out-of-the-loop ... since when did the EA Sports exclusive license of the NFL expire?

I guess it didn't.

For those that don't remember, ESPN backed the NFL 2K series, which sent EA Sports looking for an exclusive deal, to kill all other franchises.

I really liked 2K5 on the Xbox, even though it had dated graphics (although not too terribly bad compared to Madden on even the Xbox 360 at the time) so it would also run on the Xbox and PS2. It had many gameplay innovations and, unlike Madden, didn't have some f'd up penalty/post-play issues where the logic was utterly broken.

Also...fun fact for College fans, there is a mod community via Operation Sports already making a mod for the new Joe Montana that will feature all the NCAA FBS teams, rosters, player ratings and stadiums...yes that's right.
I guess that's how most people will get the NFL players and teams too. It'll be interesting to see what both the NCAA and the NFL PA will try to do when many people are playing with modified rosters.

Microsoft is first party sponsor to the NFL, not third party. EA is exclusive 3rd party. That's the first loophole. Being first party they can outsource development to anyone they choose as acting contracted subsidiary...that's 2K, the second loophole.

That being said, there is already a mod community geared up an ready to create an NCAA mod for Joe Montana 2K16.

theres limited NFL rights you can obtain for mobile games, which the EA exclusive didnt cover.some game a couple years ago used all team names and logos but no players as they didnt have the NFLPA deal.

Ahhh, didn't know about the mobile games. And you're right, NFL != NFL PA, my bad.

Common misconception here is that EA panicked for this. the NFL wanted the exclusive deal and EA was basically the first in line.
I heard that as well, but the end was the same.

NKFL 2K was awful IMO. It's the reason I got into Madden. I rented 2K from the Blockbuster on Americana and Texas Ave (hood, bitches. #represent) and I returned it about an hour later and rented Madden. Got hooked after that.

I still miss NCAA Football more. It became a more fun game for me over Madden the more I got involved with UCF.

ESPN 2001 was what made EA buy the exclusive rights to the NFL...it was a better game and sega was charging 20 bucks for it...truthfully i cant wait for it...

I was talking ESPN NFL 2K5 ... greatly improved over early series releases.

We all do. I have the last 2 on my PS3.

It wasnt ESPN 2001 but again....if you read the thread, its not what made EA do anything.

the NFL wanted the exclusive partner just like everything else they do (think beer, cell phone, apparel, DirecTV...etc). EA had the longest relationship so they got the deal and quite frankly...the NFL didnt want their video game costing $20. That probably pissed them off that their brand was thrown into a price war (Madden also dropped by $10 that year)

Not gonna lie, I expected cross-platform gaming to be the focus of E3 this year. Hate that it's taking this long.
