Election Day A Paid Holiday?

Yea you're right. Between absentee voting, weeks of early voting, and polling stations being open from 7 am to 7 pm, there's just not a single opportunity for people who work to vote.

Republicans suppressing the vote!! Nailed it!!!

With so many options why even have election day! We don't need it!

I'm actually fine with that. I'd applaud it. Given that early voting already starts weeks before "election day", just tell people that they have until November 6th to get their ballot in any way they choose.

It makes Nov 6th just a deadline rather than "the" day.

I don't really know why anyone waits until election day anymore.

Either make it a holiday or have elections on Sunday like Colombia does it

But still have early voting, making it convenient to vote should not be partisan

George Washington's birthday is a federal holiday as well, could easily switch that one out as well.

I always do because the lines are shorter at my polling place than they are for early voting. Walked in, 10-15 minutes later, I was done.

It's really hard to get lazy Democrats to vote guys. We need government pickups at their house. Maybe provide snacks too and $10 for their time.

Honest question though- why not vote by mail? I've voted by mail in every election. It's so convenient. I don't understand why everyone doesn't do this.

I voted once in line in 1996. Never again. By mail every year since and I love it. With the dawn of the interwebs, I can research every candidate, amendment, and whatever else is on the ballot in a a timely fashion over the course of almost a month.

I don’t know. I guess it’s a kind of civic duty feeling about doing it in person. You watch in other countries when people get the right to vote and they wait hours in line even at great personal risk to themselves. It just seems like going in person is the least I can do.

I don’t get all uppity about it. I’ve voted by mail before. It’s just something I prefer doing in person.

yeah, replace presidents day. After Obama n Trump, there is 0 reason to celebrate it.

As somebody who's worked in this field for the past 12 years, early voting last 2 weeks in most of Florida, you can vote by mail up to a month ahead of time therefore there are no excuses for not voting. I always have to work about 45-50 days in a row every election with no days off to accommodate everyone but there are still excuses as to why they didn't have time or couldn't make it to vote, etc.

The state of Oregon votes by mail for ALL voters for ALL elections so why would they need Election Day off?

Unless they pay you to vote, you not going to get some potato chip eating Democrats. You know the ones I'm talking about. Tax the rich while their playing fortnight all day.

Why not put Election Day on Thanksgiving then?

More seriously, here's my long-standing view ...

24 hours, from 0000 UTC to 2359 UTC, world-wide. No more 'moving the time' so the US media can report who won before the polls even close in Hawaii, or who won in a state when part of the state is in a timezone a hour behind.

the last mid term had a lots of votes thrown out/not counted bc of signature matches(including a former congressman). I don't like voting by mail bc I feel like it won't get counted unless we are close to recount margins. The mid term and last POTUS election I voted early in person.

Also I assume Oregon is a lot easier to manage compared to Florida which has over 20 million people.

The only counted if close thing is a myth in FL. Vote by mails start getting counted at least a week prior to election day. Go onto the FL Division of Elections website or your local county's site on election night and right at 7pm start refreshing the results. The first things posted in the totals before any of the election day precinct results are all of the early voting totals as well as all of the Vote By Mail totals up to that point that have been counted. Anybody who mails in a ballot and signature doesn't match have time to cure their signature as well to make the vote count.

Early voting is always everyday including weekends for 8 to 12 hours each day depending on your local county.

I get that there are other ways to vote but why do you all care if election day is a holiday?

There's no reason against it really. Just because you think we don't NEED it to be a holiday doesn't mean it wouldn't be better. Shouldn't we always be pursuing improvement.

Unless...

Wait a sec...

Ooooohh you don't WANT people to vote. Now I get it.

If people don't vote, I am out of a job so no that won't work. It's just why make it a National Holiday when so many would have to work anyway especially in the Central Florida Region. Any we will continue to get 50% turnouts in non Presidential years and 70% turnouts for Presidential years. Just another excuse for a paid day off. I am sure the numbers won't improve turnout despite having it a holiday.

Why not?

ok then how about Election Day being on Sunday?

1.) We don't need any holidays in the middle of the week. 4th of July, Xmas and New Years are hard enough.

2.) We can replace another holiday with an Election Day holiday (president's day?)

3.) Why can't we just have 2-3 weeks of open voting before Election Day?

Except for Provisional.

I voted on a Provisional ballot after someone showed up first, and my vote was stolen from me. They might have not had to show ID back then, but I had to show 3 forms, to prove who I was.

I started voting by mail after that.

Correct, provisionals get reviewed the Wed and Thurs after Election Day then go to canvassing board for final approval/rejection. Those are counted last along with any overseas vote by mail ballots that fall within the 10 day rule.

even if we made it a holiday, i just dont know if we would see a big improvement in voter participation. unfortunately there are a lot of people that dont vote because they hate both candidates. those people still wouldnt vote if there was a holiday.

I guess a lot of people party hard for the SB but I never have. It's usually a game that I'm mildly interested in, mostly watching for some clever ads.

Definitely NOT for the half time music this year. Who in the hell thought shitty Maroon 5 is a good choice for a Super Bowl?
