Ford cancels $1.6B investment in Mexico to invest $700M in Detroit

Creating "700 jobs to start" which may increase.

Can't say Trump isn't making an instant difference in how these companies view shipping jobs offshore.

He also stuck a knife in GM's eye this morning for making a small amount of Cruzs.

If I were Mexico, I'd be searching for alternative things to do right about now.

If you were Mexico, then Mexico would be you and they'd use your body to build boring American cars.

In the same press conference Ford announced a big shift towards hybrids and EVs. They announced a hybrid F150 (manufactured in Dearborn), hybrid Mustang (Flintrock) and an all electric SUV that has a battery capacity equal to the highest end Tesla today in 2020. Ford gets its batteries from LG Chem in Holland Michigan. So the focus on a Michigan plant may have more to do with not wanting to ship many hundreds of pounds of batteries per vehicle across 2/3rds of North America.

this certainly plays into it. but before trump even started talking to them, it certainly was economical to ship them to mexico. now they have changed their minds.

Lol, except they were saying during the election there is no way they were not building the plant. It's all posturing by both sides. Ford should just let it ride and not pick a fight with the twitterer in chief, they're getting great pub out of this.

How would such a tax work? Wouldn't it increase the price of all imported cars? So now I'll need to pay more for a car because in Detroit someone refuses to learn a more marketable skill than tightening lug nuts?

The Mexicans will just cross the border and work at the US plant at $30/hr instead of $5/hour back home. We will be paying more for the same product built by the same people

Yeah, at the time of posting I was under the impression the trade deals would be renegotiated. I've since seen Trump has pulled out of the TPP. I still think some deal will be made but I guess the TPP was not salvageable so it was easier to pull out and start from scratch.

President Trump does not want big trading deals with multiple countries, but simpler trade deals with individual countries (because he says TPP type deals are bad for the US). He and his team will try to create individual trading agreements with the TPP countries.

That's sort of what I was alluding to with "some deal" because in the end the US can't fully remove itself from the region in these type of discussions. If we do, China will take our place to solidify their regional power over the fastest growing region in the world.
 
So they canceled the plant in Mexico (probably preventing a couple of Mexicans from crossing the border) and now they are going to build the plant in China. Since China's president probably bought a membership at Mar-a-lago, president Dumb won't say anything this time.
He is already excusing China in the whole NK deal: Trump says China tried but failed to help on North Korea
